Nothing beats practice and experienced guidance, but this text is an aide memoire I am glad to have found. British Journal of Hospital Medicine I can thoroughly recommend this book. It should be available in all departments of anaesthesia and critical care as a handy and rapid reference for anaesthetists beginning their training or before carrying out an invasive procedure. Anaesthesia I enjoyed reading through this handbook size, soft cover book...I believe amny anaesthetic and critical care trainess will purchase a copy of the book and it will be a popular choice for departmental libraries. It should also be of interest to other acute medical and surgical trainees, plus other critical care and theatre staff. The writing style and clear illustrations make this book very easy to read. The organisation of the chapters and the size of the book make it an excellent reference text which can be taken to work... It is also a valuable resource for the FRCA examinations. About the Author

Guy Jackson graduated from Southampton University in 1998, beginning his anaesthetic career in 2002. He worked in Chichester, Portsmouth and in the Imperial School of Anaesthesia before his appointment as a consultant at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading in 2009.

Christopher Whiten is a consultant anaesthetist currently working in London. He studied medicine at University College London Medical School, graduating in 1996. Following graduation he went on to work in hospitals throughout London, initially in medicine, and then started training in anaesthesia in 2001.

Neil Soni trained in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care in Sydney, Australia, before being appointed Senior Lecturer at Westminster Hospital, UK in 1985. He then became a Consultant in Intensive Care and Anaesthesia at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, before becoming Consultant Anaesthetist and Intensivist at Imperial College, London, UK.

About the Author
Scott James is an Elder at The Church at Brook Hills in Birmingham, AL, where he also serves in the children s and youth ministries. Professionally, he works as a pediatric physician and researcher. Scott and his wife Jaime have four children Will, Kirstine, Benjamin, & Bethan. He is also the author of The Expected One: Anticipating All of Jesus in Advent.

Extremely helpful, Gospel-centered, clear devotional for parents to use with children at Easter.

Looking for an easy to use resource for helping your kids go deeper into the Bible story this Easter? Scott James has given us a beautiful resource in his book Mission Accomplished: A Two-Week Family Easter Devotional (New Growth Press, 2015). This book is intended to lead families through a devotional each day the week before and the week following Easter.

I’ll jump to the chase. Get this book, and order it now. You still have time to get this by Palm Sunday.

I haven’t seen another devotional that is as Gospel-centered and true to the text, nor one as helpful and clearly laid out, as this little two-week devotional.

Each day’s reading is organized as follows: a selection of Scripture to be read, a short devotional (about 1 page), discussion questions (with answers for the parents), a suggestion about what to pray about in response to the lesson, and then either a family activity or a song to sing that is related to the lesson. The activities are usually a craft that is engaging for young minds. The songs are hymns. I appreciate that the text is not included, this will help kids learn to interact with their own Bibles.

The illustrations by A.E. Macha are bright and cheerful, but not overpowering. The insights and connections with the Old Testament (particularly the Passover and the sacrificial lamb), are very helpful and simple enough for young children to understand. I suspect that elementary and middle school children will be most appreciative of the book, but it can be used with even younger children.

I highly recommend this work and trust it will be a blessing to Christian families everywhere.

Great Resource

Mission Accomplished is a new two week family devotional by Scott James that is just in time for Easter. The cross and the resurrection are at the heart of the Christian Gospel and Easter is a perfect time to bring these truths front and center for our families. It is easy to get distracted and forget to focus on the important things and this helps us to refocus our families on the Cross of Christ and His victory over death.

Mission Accomplished is divided into two weeks. Week One: Walking With Jesus to the Cross begins with Palm Sunday and walks with Jesus to the Cross, ending with Jesus in the tomb. Week Two: The Risen King focuses on the resurrection, Jesus on the road to Emmaus with the disciples, the Great Commission, our freedom from sin and our hope in His return.

The layout of Mission Accomplished is helpful in leading a family devotional. "Each devotion includes a Bible passage to read together, notes to help you discuss the passage with your child ("Think About It"), questions and answers to guide your discussion ("Talk About It"), and suggestions for a short time of prayer. Each devotional time could take anywhere form ten to twenty minutes," The days also alternate between a hymn to be sung together and a family activity to do. These devotionals are excellent and provide a great outline for parents to interact with their kids and Scripture over a two-week period. Great family resources are what I have come to expect from New Growth Press and Mission Accomplished meets those expectations. I am definitely looking forward to using this with my family this year.

Excellent 2-week Easter family devotional!

Scott James, pediatric surgeon and devoted father wrote this fourteen day devotional, Mission Accomplished with families in mind. The first week begins with Palm Sunday and ends with "The Dark Day in Between," with Jesus in the tomb. The second week, "when Jesus' rescue mission seems to have failed," focuses on death's defeat and Christ's resurrection. His conversations with the disciples and the "marching orders" Christ gave to the disciples to spread His message to the world, what we know as the "Great Commission."

Devotions begin with scripture to be read aloud or together with featured suggestions to "Think About It." Question and answer prompts in "Talk About It" relate to youngsters experiences and encourage discussion, followed by a brief prayer time. Devotions take ten to twenty minutes and end with either a familiar hymn or another family activity. I've never seen such a useful, biblically sound, simply written family devotional before and highly recommend it.

With that said, it is quite possible that sexual integrity isn’t necessarily a fight you will choose to take on. Christian or not, it may seem easier to live sexually active and not bother swimming against the current of sexual acceptance or even deal with the peer pressure of resisting. Your thoughts might be: “There are bigger things intimidating me right now and I’m not sure if I have the energy or vision to fight off this battle. I’ll just let whatever happens happen—and pay the price later and hope for God’s mercy. Maybe He can help me fix whatever problems I might create now through sexual activity later after I’m married.” I don’t condemn you for thinking that way sometimes. Besides, you’re probably one of the many young adults who loves God and wants to do what’s right. If you could snap your fingers and remain sexually inactive until you marry the right one I’m sure you would. Although it doesn’t work that way, perhaps if you at least had some helpful tools and enough inspiration, you would probably give Biblical sexual purity a real shot. Well, I believe that God has a message for you to hear and my hope is that some of those helpful tools will be found in this book. Sexual integrity according to the Bible is not about perfectionism. Just as easily as Christians can get sloppy and loose in this area, the best of us, on the flip side, can get legalistic and critical. We won’t do well in either extreme. God simply wants your whole heart. God loves and wants the real you, both when you’re at your best, and when you’re at your worst. He wants you to welcome Him in every part of your life, including that part of you concerning sex, relationships and future marriage. God sees your desire to please Him and your passion to reach for Him in this area. You wouldn’t be reading this book right now if it weren’t true. Again, God’s will is your sexual purity; but thankfully His way is always best. His instructions are for our benefit. His heart is for our good. Therefore this God-journey is intended to bless you. May this book be fuel for your specific and adventurous journey. You are special to God. Your desire for sex and marriage is God-given. He understands you and is bringing you into a place of significance and value.

A MUST READ for all

Pastor Sam's book provides real life, biblical answers to the age old question, "How do you wait to have sex until the right person comes into your life?" Sam is qualified to handle such a subject, not only as a gifted bible teacher, but by his own personal day by day struggles and victories in abstaining from sex until the day when my daughter, Pastor Kimberly, entered his life and became his wife some 16 years ago. You will find this book funny and hilarious, thought provoking and challenging but most importantly, you will learn how to handle the emotions of such a wonderful, powerful and holy God given gift of sex in the right way, HIS WAY.

What took so long?

HE SAYS: In a culture and unfortunately (church culture) that is steeped in sexual bondage and confusion, Sam Beckworth does a phenomenal job tackling this subject with a fresh, positive view. It's right there in the title..."Yes". This is really the theme and Sam's approach in every chapter. To all the "don'ts" associated with sexual promiscuity in the Bible, Sam gives a positive interpretation by spending more time than any other author i have read on the subject underscoring God's heart for his people (and all people) regarding the gift of sex. I have pastored in the sexual recovery ministry for over a decade and I cannot think of a church body that wouldn't see immediate impact from implementing this book and its principles to youth and adults alike. Every youth pastor and parent needs to buy this book, absorb then teach this book to our youth so they are not only equipped for the battle surrounding this subject but prepared to accept God's gift of a mate that He wants to bring them.

SHE SAYS: Where on earth was this book when I was growing up? Pastor Sam tackles the difficult and, more importantly, highly contested subject of sexual purity in this fearless, thorough, humorous and honoring work. In a world where Christians oftentimes allow culture to set the standard, Sam upholds the Word of God as the true plumb-line. He is transparent yet careful to present the Biblical parameters for loving sexual encounters in a way that is neither over-bearing nor judgmental.

While this book can (and should) be read by teens and young adults, parents such as myself will flock to its wisdom and timely nature. The truths are presented so honestly (lets face it, he's just plain hilarious) and thoughtfully its a book you will not want to miss out on buying. In fact, buy a dozen...you'll find yourself passing them out like hotcakes!

Wonderful Book!

Watch this author -- she's great, and I hope she publishes more, soon. "To the River" is beautifully written, enriched by the author's clear passion for, and interest in, the relationships between outer and inner landscapes, history, and culture. It was hard to believe this is her first book, or that she is so young (by my standards, anyway). Her past life with its periods of intentional withdrawal from "normal" society and extensive time spent observing the natural world has paid her big dividends.

Laing's book brought to life quite vividly a part of the world I've never seen. As a fellow hydrophiliac, nature observer, and walker, I sometimes felt I was there with her as she described her journey down the Ouse. Ms. Laing is welcome to walk a river here in Alaska with me any time . . .

More Leonard than Virginia...

I had high hopes for "To the River," but reading it was a strange experience. I felt that Olivia Laing's travelogue and meditation on the Sussex landscape was too amorphous for my taste. And because I am a Virginia Woolf fan, I particularly wanted to see how Laing would fold Virginia in to the book. In a strange way, I felt she understood and liked Leonard Woolf better. She "channels" Leonard more clearly than Virginia: his fits of frustration at himself and others, his dark pessimism.

Perhaps I thought that there would be more of a personal reflection here on what drove the author to take this journey. Instead, I felt the book got overladen with details about wild plants, to an almost ridiculous degree. I was amused to read in the author bio at the end that Laing earned a degree in medicinal plants and practiced as an herbalist! The fact that she left such details out was rather annoying. I'd rather know who a person is, with all their flaws and quirks, especially as there are such grim (but vague) reflections about the past dotted throughout the book, and about humanity. There *are* flashes of brilliance. In a passage I highlighted, Laing writes, "I wonder if this pervasive human dislike of virulent species, the pests and opportunists, is a kind of projection, if the Himalayan balsam and mink act as a dark mirror in which we catch ourselves: man the destroyer, man the weed."

I sensed a lot of deep personal unhappiness that Laing never fully put into words. It seems that in her next book, "The Trip to Echo Spring," she did voice a lot of her own story, and some readers took her to task for this. I think the place to have written about herself was this book. Otherwise, to my mind, the landscape and the river can't tell the whole story. But the writing's visual and beautiful, if a little laden with dialect terms that stop the flow of the narrative.

Lovely book, brilliant writer

Olivia Laing has written a stunning reflection on the Ouse, and actually on all rivers. Her prose undulates along with the changing watercourse, prodding out regional histories as she wends her way along the riverbank. Past and present mingle and merge; you share the author's surprise at being jolted from her daydreams by occasional hikers and fishermen. A lovely book that reinforces our connections with the chronology of our chosen place.
This book is pure delight.

Good book, but could be more interesting

Keming Yang mentioned that "each choice of a research topic or strategy is a choice of what kind of perosn to be", and he chose this one instead of the "comparative democratic development in Russia and China". I guess it might be more fruitful if he did otherwise. A sociology perspective on the entrepreneurship couldn't seem to bridge the gap between "institution-entrepreneurship" and "entrepreneurship-development". Institution hole and double entrepreneurship had been well addressed in the rent-seeking and profit-seeking literatures, not much excitement here.

There are three other problems:
1. the non-comparative nature of the topic took away the author's potential advangage of a cultural perspective;
2. it under-estimates the structural change in China's institutional reform, especially in recent years;
3. the focus on Institution hole and double entrepreneurship blurs the theoretical thrust of the argument of "institution - entrepreneurship - development".

entrepreneurs coping

Yang provides an understanding of what entrepreneurs face in China. A vital topic if China's economy is to continue to grow strongly. He explains how people cope with the business and political situation. The Chinese Communist Party often rules by policy and not by law. Policies are usually more flexible and consistent with some overall political system than a rigid codification of law. Another key advantage is that policies can be easier for ordinary folk to understand; rather than some legalese.

The book also has several case studies of Chinese entrepreneurs. Well, some successful ones, at least. He doesn't really talk much about those who have failed. But this is scarcely any different than all those breezy business books about starting up in the US. Few of those ever chronicle the many American failures. Capitalism does have a downside, in the human toll of these failures, in any country where it is practised.

If you want to understand entrepreneurship in China, read this book

This is the best book that I have read on entrepreneurship in China. Actually, I just happen to read the review on this book by Professor Douglas Guthrie (New York University) published at Contemporary Sociology, which is very positive. In my view, everyone who wants to understand China's amazing economic achievements should read this book; it is not just about entrepreneurship; it is about how different kinds of Chinese people (officials, ordinary people, business owners, of course) behave as well. It is full of insights and conceptual innovations. I don't know whether it will become a classic, but I am pretty sure many people will still find this book useful many years later.
