Recently visited Melbourne, the hilight was a visit to this resturant. Some of the best food ever, anywhere. The lamb chops and Penang curry were amazing. I had to have the cookbook. Thankfully Amazon had it. Cannot wait to try the recipes myself.

C. L. Moore created Jirel, ruler of Joiry, in reaction to the beefy total-testosterone blood-and-thunder tales of '30s pulp magazines, but Jirel is no anti-Conan. She's a good Catholic girl, stubbornly purposeful, relentless in pursuit of enemies or vengeance, hard-boiled and a little stupid, and cannot be distracted by mere physical attractiveness. Indeed, in Jirel's world, beauty = decadence = corruption. Were these stories written today, inevitably Jirel would have a lot of hot sex, but as they were first published in Weird Tales between 1934-1939, sexual attraction is mostly only vividly implied. No loss. Jirel's journeys through unnatural landscapes and her battles with supernatural opponents are still wonderful to read, and though newcomers Red Sonja and Xena are more famous now, Jirel rules as the archetypal, indomitable redheaded swordswoman in chain mail and greaves, swinging her "great two-edged sword."

C.L. Moore (1911-1987) was born in Indianapolis and became a leading author of science fantasies for WEIRD TALES in the 1930s. After her marriage to fellow SF writer Henry Kuttner in 1940 she concentrated on writing science fiction, usually in collaboration with her husband. She turned to screenwriting after his untimely death; her TV series included MAVERICK and 77 SUNSET STRIP.

The first lady of swords against sorcery...

"Guillaume's white teeth clicked on a startled oath. He stared. Joiry's lady glared back at him from between her captors, wild red hair tousled, wild lion-yellow eyes ablaze.

'God curse you!" snarled the lady of Joiry between clenched teeth. 'God blast your black heart!'"

In such fashion did Jirel of Joiry, the first female protagonist in the genre now defined as sword-and-sorcery, explode from the pulp pages of Weird Tales in October of 1934. The story, "Black God's Kiss," is the first and finest of the five collected in this book. (The five are essentially the sum of Jirel's legend. A sixth, "Quest of the Starstone," was written to combine Jirel with Ms. Moore's other famous lead, space outlaw Northwest Smith, and is not included here.)

"Black God's Kiss" establishes the tone and theme of Jirel's legend, as well as the basic plot for each tale: she ventures to a strange and/or dark otherworld and, through her spiritual and emotional willpower, manages to survive, gaining not treasure but self-knowledge. A curious and noteworthy detail: though an expert swordsman, Jirel does not fight a single duel throughout the tales. Rather, she herself is the sword wielded against sorcery. ("The face above her mail might not have been fair in a woman's head-dress, but in the steel setting of her armor it had a biting, sword-edge beauty as keen as the flash of blades.")

Ms. Moore's writing is, on the whole, transparent and clean. It does suffer from some of the tendencies common among other writers of the time (longer descriptions than necessary; multiple adverbs; an unhealthy fondness for abstract words--gulfs, vastness, fathomless, etc.). More detail about Jirel as a character--precious little is mentioned of her parentage, childhood, and the nature of her fiefdom--would have been welcome, too. (Then again, the heroine can be said to spring newly forged into the stories' setting--she simply is what she is.) Many of the otherwordly descriptions are vivid and haunting, even by modern fantasy standards. Her willingness not to spoon-feed the reader the precise nature of the powers Jirel encounters (e.g. the light-devil in "Kiss" and the witch in "The Dark Land") is also appreciated.

Although "Kiss" is likely the only one of the five that would be published by a professional magazine today, this is an easily read and worthwhile collection for the serious fantasy fan--and "Kiss" is a must-read. Three fascinating stars.

I came across a copy of this while I was ill in bed in France. Don't know how I got it. Anyway it was a brilliant read and I enjoyed it very much. Unfortunately when I moved back to England I could only take a few cases with me and I had to leave my books behind. It was with great pleasure that I found another copy recently. It's a great read and if you like fantasy adventure with a bit of sword and sorcery thrown in books you'll surely like this one. It's a great story with a feisty redhead as the heroin. C.L. Moore had a very good way with words and knew how to tell a brilliant story. Shame she's not with us any more.

I had been looking forward to reading this book for some time before finally purchasing a copy. It was well worth the wait. It turned out to be a quick read, but only owing to the fact that I could barely put it down once I started it.

The influence of Robert E. Howard is very apparent, but Jirel is not simply a female Conan, Solomon Kane, or any of his other characters. Moore has created her own original universe, one that I’m sure REH would have loved to read about. If you’ve already finished off everything REH wrote and you’re looking for something similar, Jirel is your girl.

“Hellsgarde” is easily my favorite of the collection. Very mysterious and the ending is perfect.

Dated by today's standards

This book has been a mainstay in Communications Theories courses in universities across America for most of the 21st century thus far, but it hasn't been updated much since its original publication in 2000. For a book that talks about Mass Comm. theories, it still provides a solid foundation as far as the histories of many theories go, but much of Severin and Tankard's commentary on technology (specifically the Internet) is laughably outdated. It makes me wonder how much progress has been made in the field in the 12 years since this book's initial publication.

Buy it if you must, but know that there are more up-to-date resources out there that deserve to bump this dusty tome from its revered position among college faculty.

I'm On The Fence

I purchased this book as required reading for a graduate class. I actually meant to purchase the 5th edition, not the 4th. Still, after comparing my version to the one my professor had, I realized that the only difference between the two seems to be an extra chapter in the 4th edition. While the old theories may not have necessarily changed, I'm sure there are some newer theories or newer ways to apply the old theories. If anything, this book should be updated to include the most recent technology and social media.

Godfrey Muganda is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at North Central College. He teaches a wide variety of courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels including courses in Linux and Unix programming, Windows and .NET programming, web application development, web services, data structures, and algorithms. He is a past winner of the North Central College faculty award for outstanding scholarship. His primary research interests are in the area of fuzzy sets and systems.

There are better Java textbooks

After using this text for one semester as an adjunct instructor, I have to say that there must be, I hope, better books for both students and instructors. For a 3rd edition, it's surprising that there are still some inaccuracies in the text - even the online version. And the test bank is really not a good assessment tool, and has questions which are poorly worded, and several even with incorrect answers. Considering that [test bank] is also an online source for instructors that should be corrected by now, it suggests that the publisher does not really care about this topic as much as the price suggests.

And, the online access period for students who purchase the book or the online version (much cheaper) is only 6 months, even though the book states, and the mere size suggests, it is designed for at least a 2 semester course. Poor students! Buy a book for the better part of $200, but the online material won't be available for the 2nd semester of the class... Oh, but you can *buy* additional access from the publisher, of course.

My third nit, as an instructor, is that the book is littered with "Checkpoints" that require access to myProgrammingLab (.com), but that is an additional cost item. Open your wallet.

Finally, the book is very late in bringing modern UI concepts, i.e., windows, et al, into the picture. Since much of the current interest in Java is its applicability to mobile devices, this text, or courses that use it, may not be what you are looking for if learning to write Android apps is your primary goal. (It could serve that purpose, but clearly not what the text is targeted towards, and a dash to get there even in 2 semesters.)

About the Author

Thomas Carlyle was a Victorian-era Scottish author, philosopher, and historian. Raised by a strict Calvinist family, Carlyle abandoned his career with the clergy in 1821 after losing his faith, focusing instead on writing. Carlyle went on to publish such noted works as Life of Schiller, Sartor Resartus which was inspired by his crisis of faith, and The French Revolution, and became one of the most prominent writers of his day. Carlyle s later works included Heroes and Hero-Worship and Frederick the Great. Carlyle passed away in 1881.

Interesting Life of a Great King

Carlyle's style of writing captures the reader's attention. Frederick the Great was a marvelous subject for him with his family, successful but emotional life, and very many friendships.
