A children's classic

My youngest sister was born in 1965, and I remember when she got this for her fourth birthday. She and I both had many children's books as youngsters, and this is the one that both of us remember best. I would read to her and show her the pictures, and it would hold her interest even at that young age. She would laugh with delight at the antics of all of the animals in the book, particularly "Babykins", a particularly ill behaved kitten sitting in a high chair and throwing its food around with a spoon when nobody was looking. When my sister was grown and had her own children, this is the book that she would mention as wanting a copy of to give to them. I highly recommend it. Besides having a method that works at holding children's interest, you just don't see craftsmanship in illustrations like this anymore.

Over 2,500 words with 1000 pictures! We want a reprint!

Richard Scarry books are delightful and teach children about life and language. This particular book is one of the most interesting ways to teach children over 2,500 words.

On the inside cover all the animals introduce themselves. There are cats, mice, pigs, bears, chickens and just about every animal you can think of. These entertaining animals appear on various pages and help to tell the story of words.

The words are organized according to the alphabet just as in an adult dictionary. Most of the words are used in a sentence and they all have illustrations. Some of the items are combined into one large picture. When "Ali Cat" is coloring on one page, each crayon and the color is displayed on the page. The words: colors, colored, coloring are also typed next to the original word "color." In this way you can use all the words in sentences to teach your children even more word usage.

Yes, there are plenty of silly things to make children laugh. I found the artwork very amusing in some places. There are so many pictures, you cannot possibly see everything in one, two, or even three readings. This is a book your child will enjoy for years. I would like to see a reprint of this classic children's dictionary.

This is a wonderful book for children to pour through on their own, or read to them, (one letter at a time), for learning letters, we read about the letter we've been working on that day. For increasing their vocabulary, and understanding of vocabulary, it's been invaluable. The pictures are there for the more visual learner, and for the younger ages. When you read a word, it will show all forms of the word, plus use them in sentences. The sentences and pictures are humorous, using situations we encounter every day, or feel grateful that we haven't. I think it also helps with learning to deal with difficult situations that we encounter too.

About the Author
Stacy Palen is an award-winning professor in the Physics Department and Director of the Ott Planetarium at Weber State University. She received her BS degree from Rutgers University, and her PhD from the University of Iowa. Dr. Palen does research in the death of Sun-like stars, and formal and informal astronomy education. She spends much of her time thinking, teaching, and writing about the applications of science in everyday life. She then puts that science to use on her small farm in Ogden, Utah.

Ana Larson received a double bachelor’s degree in physics and astronomy from the University of Washington in 1990. She obtained her PhD from the University of Victoria, Victoria, B.C., Canada, in 1996, and it was during her time there that she started developing activities for the undergraduates to enhance their lectures in astronomy. Upon her graduation, she joined the University of Washington, where she is now a senior lecturer in astronomy. On average, she has taught introductory astronomy at least twice a year for the past 17+ years, most frequently for the large lecture-based course. Her developing and thorough testing of introductory, lecture-related activities has been an on-going effort for over a decade. Having recognized that students need to see connections between what is read in the textbook, taught in class, and practiced, she has made sure that the activities remain relevant as well as challenging. Ana is also the director of the Jacobsen Observatory on the University of Washington campus and guides undergraduates in all majors in their educational outreach efforts as they give their talks and introduce the night sky to the public during public viewing nights.

My kids love the Tsum Tsum plush toys and stackable figurines. We read books every night, and have found that they become more engaged with booktime when the book is about a topic or something they really like. I wanted a story book about Tsum Tsums, but this was the only book I found. It was a fun way to further explain haiku and poetry to my 4 and 6 year olds! This book is def. an eye opener. Great reading material for anybody interested in changing the world we live in. I enjoyed every chapter and I'm def. looking forward to hearing more from Durso in the near future! Do yourself a favor and get the book!

An honest view

If you are seeking an exciting, and completely false, account of the Roma in America(such as the reviewer above apparently is), then this is not the book for you. There are plenty of books that further damage our reputation with the stereotypes of our people. It is refreshing to read a very realistic account. People, like the reviewer above, need to realize that the stereotypes have caused extreme discrimination, all in the name of romanticized entertainment. If it doesn't hurt them, they don't care. As long as they have a good read, however fictional it is.

If you are seeking the truth about the Roma, then this book will be a good addition to your collection.
