About the Author
"Col Ben" Findley is an NRA-Certified Pistol Instructor, NRA Range Safety Officer, and FL Concealed Carry License Instructor. He is retired with 30 years service in the U.S. Air Force, with joint services weapons training, Special Ops duty at various bases, and is Air Force qualified as "Expert" in small arms. Col Ben is a veteran of the Vietnam War and Persian Gulf War, Operation Desert Storm, Operation Desert Shield, Operation Restore Hope in Somolia, and the Bosnia War. He served with HQ, U.S. Special Operations Command at MacDill AFB, FL and with the Special Operations Command, Atlantic at Ft Bragg, NC. Ben has appeared on the History Channel's "Secrets of War" episode 51, Psychological Warfare, and co-authored the Air Force book "Psychological Operations." He was awarded the PSYOPS Outstanding Instructor Award for the U.S. Air Force Special Ops School at Hurlburt Field, FL. "Col Ben" has been teaching at the college level and in the military for over 40 years and has many years of firearms, weapons systems, and shooting experiences. He enjoys recreational shooting for fun and with the International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA).

All in one: Basics Through Advanced in Tips & Techniques

I am so jazzed about this book “Concealed Carry and Handgun Essentials for Personal Protection”! And it is not only about CC, but also perfect for beginners on the “essentials” of handguns – period! I bought 25 of these books for our Annie Oak-Tree Ladies shooting group @ Oak Tree Gun Club in Southern California. I read a chapter from the book named “Clip or Magazine – Does it Matter?” on USACARRY.com a few weeks ago and was impressed with its simplicity yet thoroughness at the same time – and knew I had to buy copies of the entire book to share with my fellow female shooters!

I’ve referenced through it a few times and can easily comprehend everything that I’ve read. And the questions at the end of some of the chapters asking “us” what we think make great discussion topics. I go onto the various gun forums sometimes and the people get so technical I feel like I need an Engineering degree to understand – and that takes all of the fun out of it! Kudos to Col Ben Findley for writing a book that’s concise, thorough, yet easy to follow and do.

I highly recommend it for all levels of shooting experience!

This is a fantastic book! I am very impressed with how comprehensive it is yet written with a style that is easy to read, comprehend and remember. I am an active NRA certified Instructor and Range Safety Officer and a Marine. This book has become my go to reference book which I review often as I try to emulate its style while instructing students as well as helping shooters at the range. I am amazed with how much information is available in this one book for shooters of all experience levels. I highly recommend this book as one that you will not only benefit from immediately, but also one you will surely not bury in a bookcase after reading. Instead you will keep it out and review it often.

A Definitive Reference for Concealed Carry!

I have read many fine articles from Col. Ben on various firearm related websites. I have always found his advice to be most useful and most of all "practical" in real world application. Just as I have read many of Massad Ayoob's books and always appreciated his years of experience, I also find Col. Ben to be yet another fine teacher who has many decades of military, law enforcement and street experience. His credentials are exhuastive. This latest book from Col. Ben seems to be rapidly gaining a lot off acclaim for it's incredible content (57 Chapters and 272 pages) of text, graphs, charts, useful demonstration images and most of all real world experiences.

There are many who merely author books and render advice, but there are very few like Col. Ben who truly know what they're talking about. Individuals like him have actually lived a lifetime of real world firearm use. I cannot recommend his work any higher. Anyone serious about carrying a concealed firearm (which are now millions of Americans and growing) needs to get the right advice from the beginning. This is a book desgined for all levels of firearms knowledge. Whether you're a beginner or an old retired law enforcement officer of four decades like myself . . . you'll appreciate the exhaustive information presented in this fine book. This is a "MUST HAVE" in everyone's collection of firearm instructional and reference materials . . . and it just may save your life one day.

First aid for the psyche

As a therapist, I'm constantly looking out for helpful resources for clients. This book has quickly been added to my list. It so clearly explores the seven most common--and inevitable, if you're human!--psychological injuries and then provides specific "first aid" treatments for each:

1. Rejection--The emotional cuts and scrapes of daily life
Description:
Rejections can inflict four distinct emotional wounds, each of which might require some from of emotional first aid: lingering visceral pain, anger and aggressive urges, harm to self-esteem, and damage to feeling that we belong. (p. 17)
Treatments:
* Argue with self-criticism
* Revive your self-worth
* Replenish feelings of social connection
* Desensitize yourself

2. Loneliness--Relationship muscle weakens
Description:
Loneliness makes us constantly on guard, prepared for the disappointment and rejection we are sure will come. As a result, we miss opportunities to make social connections and behave in ways that push others away. (p. 53)
Treatments:
* Remove your negatively tinted glasses
* Identify your self-defeating behaviors
* Take on the other person's perspective
* Deepen your emotional bonds
* Create opportunities for social connection
* Adopt a best friend

3. Loss and Trauma--Walking on broken bones
Description:
Loss and trauma create four psychological wounds. They cause overwhelming emotional pain, they undermine our basic sense of identity and the roles we play in life, they destabilize our belief systems and our understanding of the world, and they challenge our ability to remain present and engaged in our most important relationships. (p. 85)

4. Guilt--The poison in our system
Description:
Guilt usually serves an important function by alerting us to when we might have harmed another person or when any actions we're considering might do so. However, if our offense is serious or if we've already made significant efforts to apologize to a person we harmed or atone for our actions in other ways and our guilt remains excessive, or if we suffer from substantial survivor guilt, or separation and disloyalty guilt, emotional first aid is indeed necessary. (p. 119)

5. Rumination--Picking at emotional scabs
Description:
In order to break the self-reinforcing nature of ruminative thoughts and allow our wounds to heal, we must interrupt the cycle of rumination once it gets triggered, and we should weaken the urge to ruminate at the source by diminishing the intensity of the feelings that fuel it. We must also make efforts to monitor our relationships and to ease the emotional burden we might be placing on loved ones. (p. 154)

6. Failure--Emotional chest colds become psychological pneumonias
Description:
When we fail repeatedly or when we respond to failures in ways that set back our confidence, our self-esteem, and our chances of future success, we run the risk of allowing our emotional chest cold to turn into psychological pneumonia. Because much of the anxiety associated with failures can build upon itself, it is best to be prudent and apply psychological first aid treatment as soon as possible after meaningful or bothersome failures occur. (p. 189)

Practical and completely achievable advice for handling emotional injuries

I love how this book 1) acknowledges that we need to address our emotional wounds with they happen and 2) uses practical examples and gives tangible step-by-step instructions to help deal with emotional injuries. It's not another book that leaves you with a stack of ways you *should* think and *should* react. Instead, you give it a read to learn the science -- then keep it handy (like a medicine cabinet) for when an injury happens. I've read somewhere around 10 books in this genre and this one by far stands out as the most practical and achievable guide to emotional health.

Great book!
By A Strong Woman
I learned a lot and it was fluid and easy to understand for my Masters degree. Important case studies were highlighted and vocabulary was in bold, rather italics, like the horrible book that I have now! Drugs were categorized along with the social impact, historical reference and the effects physical and psychological effects they have on our bodies. A great read!!

Good textbook on drug abuse and the justice system

This was a textbook for a college course and I actually enjoyed the book. The book is well written, has a lot of good references and stats, and it fairly neutral on the issue of drugs (legal and illegal). The book makes you think about the "war on drugs" and the costs incurred vs. the return we get on that investment.

It's pretty good, actually this book explain from the beginning of time, what was drugs back in the days and his evolution. Also in this book u will find all type of drugs and their different classification, and how the FDA classified them. Great book!!!!

This is a book of essays about life. My life. It’s not a memoir, per se, as I decided to write about some speci?c moments that will give you some insight into the people, places, and experiences that propelled me forward. (With a few steps back in the process.) I think of these pieces as “messays,” because they are a collection of stories that put my somewhat complicated life into perspective—or at least a kind of perspective.

I have been through a lot of the same stu? that you have dealt with, are dealing with, or will deal with in the future. From the struggle of being a young girl trying to ?nd her voice, to the unlikely places she found it, to the realities and heartbreak of watching an aging parent die, this book gives you (I hope) permission to be honest with yourself, to laugh, to cry, to bitch, and to scream. And maybe if you come across any of those emotions while reading, you will realize that you, too, at some point in your life had been told to “restrain yourself” because you needed to be “appropriate.”

I hate the word appropriate.

And I hate people who think they can de?ne appropriateness as an absolute, especially because they are usually the same people who try to shove toeing the line down my throat most aggressively— proselytizing politicians and preachers and prosaic comedy producers, all who specialize in prematurely adjudicating without an appropriate leg of their own to stand on.

I hope this book rede?nes the word appropriate, or shoves it into obsolescence with other meaningless words, like refudiate, jiggy, and Tea Party.

So what kind of juicy details about my life are included? Well, let me be clear up front: First, this is not a book full of dark family secrets.

My father wasn’t one of those horri?c memoir dads. You know what I mean. He was not the kind of dad who did “things” to me that led to a social worker, which led to a judge, which led to an attorney asking in a closed hearing, “Where on the doll did he touch you?”

And my mother wasn’t one of those memoir moms, either. She was not some kind of emotional gorgon who scrubbed this poor author’s secret garden with Borax and Brillo pads or made her children eat their own feces in the crawl space under the basement stairs because her cult leader or the voices in her head told her to. She was more subtle than that.

At this point it should be noted that because these messays aren’t chock-full of the aforementioned themes, Lifetime Television won’t be clamoring for the TV rights to this book. Although I will share some woman-in-peril anecdotes, my woman-in-peril stories don’t involve deadly estrangement, deadly deception, or my mom and me sleeping with our deadly pool boy. So I o?er my sincere apologies right here to the careers of Missy Gold, Tracey Gold, and any other members of the Gold family who will not be employed in some made-for-TV movie incarnation of my life.

Second, I will not regale you with gag-inducing details about spontaneous sex in a Porta-Potty or how I blew some bass player from an indie band in the back of their Leinenkugel-soaked van. This is not to say I don’t weave a few tales of sexual stupidity. I did lose my virginity to a mediocre high school hockey player. I grew up in Minnesota; there were a lot of girls like me, who grew up in a wintry archipelago and gave it up to a right-wing left wing with a mullet. It was 1978; there weren’t a whole lot of options. Just ask Sarah Palin.

Third, it is not one of those mea culpa books. Those books always make my brain explode because more often than not they are less mea culpa and more everyone else is culpa. Themes like “I heroically sat idly by and watched as the administration I worked for subverted the facts to justify war and ordered torture and illegal imprisonment, but I’ll blame everyone who was around me for that.”

If you want to read one of those books, put this back on the shelf and walk over to the Your Taxes Used to Pay Me to Do a Crappy Job Running the Country and Now I Am Making Millions Lying to You About How Great I Was at It section. It’s right behind the Crafts and Hobbies aisle. Or you might want to check the How to Start Your Home Business area.

And last, it’s also not a revenge book. I am not a public laundry kind of gal, unless it’s my dog Buddy bar?ng up my thong on a busy Brooklyn street. I do share experiences that some involved may not like, and I have changed some names of people and establishments because either they have private lives that don’t need to be dragged through the public mud, even though they happened to be standing in it with me, or I would rather not give free advertising to them, as I think the services they provide suck.

I also feel awful because I could not include all the fantastic people in my life (blame my editor), but as this is not a memoir, I didn’t cover every special moment with all those who mean a lot to me so I hope I will be forgiven.

And as for the less fantastic people who have come across my path: I didn’t include too many of them for the simple reason that I remember them all too well.

Also, I sometimes lump together chunks of my life to serve as a composite of a given time period, rather than go through a linear play-by-play. I may occasionally have a date or a month wrong, but the experiences all happened within the same general time. Finding speci?c dates from my life way back on the Internet proved very unfruitful. My Wikipedia page is proof of that. So when I had to estimate, I based some of my timelines on the material that went into my shows, knowing I had an accuracy window based on a certain news cycle.

In short, I can say that all this shit happened, but I may be a bit o? in the exact order in which it appears here. It just means I should never be counted on to remember when your birthday is. (Mine is August 5. It is one of the few items on my Wikipedia page I will actually con?rm.)

Having said all of this, these messays are stories from a brain that ?uctuates from fun to fucked up and back, sometimes mid-sentence. They’re the adventures of how I evolved from a girl who just wanted to explore her dreams to a woman who came to understand that my dream was ?nding a way to use humor to speak truth to power—and ultimately realized that humor is a most useful tool to help put even the most painful moments of life into perspective.

So if you want to learn some shit about me and have a laugh, quit reading this part and get to the good stu?. The sooner you get started reading about my life, the better you will feel about your own.

Lizz Leaves Too Much Out

I first heard of Lizz Winstead when she joined forces with Al Franken on Air America, a radio station harder to find than the Fountain of Youth. Those were the days Franken was duking it out with Bill O'Reilly and writing books with titles like RUSH LIMBAUGH IS A BIG FAT IDIOT, so I would have listened if I could've found it.

Then I heard she was the co-creator of "The Daily Show". Yes, that's the Jon Stewart "Daily Show." I've never actually seen Lizz Winstead on television, which is strange since I watch her prot�g� Rachel Maddow from time to time.

Anyway, LIZZ FREE OR DIE is a book of essays, held together by her progressive personality. We Minnesotans get a good look at the music scene as it first began to explode as Lizz and her friends go dancing at The First Edition frequented by Prince and Soul Asylum. It was there a friend recommended that she try stand-up comedy. This was when Minneapolis was one of the havens for new comedians, led by Scott Hansen and including Louie Anderson. Even Roseanne Barr and Tom Arnold get a mention. Lizz eventually gets a job as the MC at First Edition.

There are times when the book skips over some possibly absorbing information. Lizz's hockey boyfriend gets her pregnant and she sees a sign offering help to wayward girls. The place sounded like the Texas House of Representatives; they put heavy pressure on her to have the baby, but Lizz never mentions the name of the place. It sounds a whole lot like Birthright. Considering the hammering Planned Parenthood is taking lately, one would think she would have jumped at the chance. Then the essay just stops; we can guess that she had an abortion but she never says where, tells us how she felt about it or anything. She just leaves it out. She also doesn't say anything about her relationship with Al Franken, something I was kind of looking forward to.

She does this again when she spends two years as the producer of "The Daily Show." After two years she just leaves. There's no explanation whatsoever as to why she left. Two months later Jon Stewart takes over the show.

Perhaps the best essay in my mind was the one about the death of her father. He literally died laughing. That's the way I want to go if I can't die in my sleep. The family spends his dying days talking about all the goofy stunts the guy pulled like buying a quarter of beef off the back of some guys truck for forty dollars. He and Lizz's mother were also stars on "The Daily Show". Maybe that's where David Letterman got the idea to feature his mother. They were also dyed-in-the-wool conservative Catholics; I could relate to that as well.

The Air America sequence is also rather interesting. It was the only Liberal radio response, outside of Garrison Keillor, to Limbaugh and the other conservative haters, and that's where Lizz discovered Rachel Maddow who was her partner during her three hour segment. They even interviewed Tim LaHaye, author of the LEFT BEHIND series and contributor to dozens of conservative "think" tanks. LaHaye could not stop talking about the coming Rapture, and Maddow who is usually nice to everybody said, "Can I have your stuff?" Talk about precognition; that's exactly what happened to Harold Camping and his followers.

Lizz would have been better served to find a co-author. It's not that she can't write, she did it for a living after all, but she too often sounds like she's bragging, and that's just not likable, no matter who you are.

Funny. Real. Loved.

Fantastic insight into a smart hilarious woman. If you are a fan of Lizz Winstead, you will be able to hear her voice through the pages. If you are not already a fan, you will fall in love with her through this collection of "messays" about her career and family life. Of course it's funny but it is also poignant and quite honest. I love this book.

I really related to the parts about religion and family. The rest of the book wasn't too shabby either.
A really fun read!

James Rickards is a counselor, investment banker, and risk manager with over thirty years' experience in capital markets. He advises the Department of Defense, the U.S. intelligence community, and major hedge funds on global finance, and served as a facilitator of the first ever financial war games conducted by the Pentagon. A frequent guest on CNBC, CNN, Fox, C-SPAN, Bloomberg TV, and NPR, Rickards also lectures at Northwestern University and at the School of Advanced International Studies.

The best thing since sliced bread?

Jim Rickards, who is famous, among other things, for his ability to accurately predict the Fed's moves ahead of time. His most recent accurate call was the implementation of Operation Twist, i.e the selling of short-term government debt and the buying of long-term government debt in order to increase short-term interest rates and decrease long-term interest rates.

The main theme of the book is that the world is already heading toward a full-blown currency war which will bring even harsher economic turmoil to the world economy than the one we experienced in the last three years since the housing bubble burst in the U.S.

Rickards explores in depth, basing his arguments on past currency wars such as the one after WW1 between several European countries and the U.S., and why currency wars are a lose-lose situation. In short, Rickards's main argument is that countries around the world are devaluing their currencies in order to boost their exports (domestically produced goods and services will be cheaper for foreigners) thereby increasing their GDP. However, such actions will frequently be met by mutual currency devaluation by other countries or by some protectionist policy such as tariffs. Therefore, countries will gain a temporary advantage until other countries retaliate, the end result of which will be: inflation brought on from currency devaluation, protectionism and the halt of free trade, thus - wealth destruction. And in a worst case scenario, an outright military conflict.

As was mentioned above, I found Rickards's thesis to be well argued and backed with plenty of historical facts. To sum up, this book just has it all, great and engaging writing, fascinating economic history, and shrewd analysis of the current and coming global crisis.

Currency Wars: The Making of the Next Global Crisis

No one is safe from Rickards' insightful analysis in this original and fast-paced history of world economic and monetary policy and the currency wars that have led to destructive outcomes more than once in the last hundred years. Despite the fact that repeated manipulation of currency by various countries throughout recent history in an attempt to dominate trade and spur domestic economic growth has failed miserably, the U.S. now faces a new currency war that might be, as Rickards says, "the currency war to end all currency wars." His disdain for the use of Quantitative Easing and the creation of a new world central bank is palpable and the urgency with which he makes his argument is cogent and frankly, terrifying. Rickards tells a fascinating story, taking the reader from the use of gold as an international currency in the Sixth century BC up to the current day, seamlessly connecting historical events in a manner that will appeal to experts and novices alike. His reductionist descriptions and gallows humor spares no one, and his analogies are both informative and beautifully written. Currency Wars is a must read for everyone, from classically-trained economists to small-time investors. But beware: after you read this book, instead of stuffing your mattress with cash, you may be inclined to do so with gold bullion.

Unlike 2008...this time we've been warned.

If you have the stomach for doing a deep dive into the causes and cures of the worldwide financial morass we're in, here it is! "Currency Wars" takes you on a journey unlike any other. From a firsthand account of the wranglings at a mock "financial war game" in the bowels of the Pentagon, through a rich and literate history of previous currency wars with their devastating outcomes, Rickards is in full command of his topic. The author then brings us right up to present moment where he offers possible endgame scenarios to this latest currency war: paper, gold, or chaos! With outcome uncertain and stakes sky high, the tension is palpable! The final chapter is simply mind blowing! But that's not all. "Currency Wars" isn't simply an economics or history book. Rickards gives us a lot more. Chapter 9 is the most stinging indictment yet of the policy and intellectual failures of the Fed, Keynesianism and Monetarism. When you finish Chapter 9 your faith in economic conventional wisdom will be thoroughly shattered. The author also offers up some of the most original theory and analysis in economics since John Maynard Keynes himself in the 1920's. It's conceptually challenging but well worth the effort.

Unlike the financial meltdown of '08, this time you can say you've been warned. Extremely timely, and yet ahead of its time, "Currency Wars" is a revelation. The Media and politicians are so far behind the curve on this story that once they start giving it some weight it will already be too late to save yourself financially. You must read this book now!
