DON'T BE FOOLED BY THE FAKE REVIEWS

***Words of warning. I smell a fake reviews***

After skim reading this book, the only thing you would have learnt is how to run a "Hello world" program and that's pretty much it.

Reviews states "it's the perfect study guide", "it's made me a better programmer" and one reviewer even goes as far as stating "he loves the amazing quantity of examples and step by step instructions and would make you an expert in a few lessons" oh please stop it..

Don't be fooled by the fake reviews, there is absolutely NO WAY in the world a 25 page study guide... YES 25 pages, I repeat again... 25 pages could equip anyone with the knowledge and experise to write code.

So what's covered in the book you say?

• A very very brief discussion on the basics and fundamentals as well as history of C++

• Thorough steps in teaching you how to write a "Hello World" program, followed by an in depth breakdown on how it works. The author even teaches you to write a complicated version of the "Hello World" program.

If you're destined to become a C++ programmer in writing "Hello World" programs and nothing else then this 25 page study guide is for you.

There are tons of free resources out there such as video tutorials on Streaming sites and websites that will do a much better job than most of the books on Amazon. One thing you'll learn as a programmer is using search engines such as G... And Y and video tutorials are your friend. They dramatically reduces time in research compared to looking for answers in books.

A sweeping romance centered around a timeless wedding dress

I was blown away by this beautiful, awe-inspiring tale of one dress that spans--and impacts--the lives of four special women. The Wedding Dress revolves around Charlotte Malone and her discovery of the dress within an old, beaten trunk...and the path down memory lane that it took her on.

While Charlotte was the main character this story revolved around, there were a lot of other central characters as well. And while one might think that this would get confusing, Rachel Hauck did an outstanding job in making each person unique and stand out to the reader. I just loved the funny quirks some of them had! Especially the "Man in Purple" character. Put me in mind of all those sayings about 'angels in our midst'. I can't say who my favorite character was, or who I bonded with the most--the entire cast was so memorable!

I've never read anything by Hauck before, so wasn't sure what to expect from the author when beginning The Wedding Dress. But she won me over almost instantly! The way she transports her readers between historical and contemporary times was really neat, unique, and well done.

The writing style was sharp and vivid, grabbing my attention from the first page. There were several passionate kisses between characters, but Hauck keeps the details down, making The Wedding Dress a book to be recommended for both older and younger readers--anyone who is a true romantic at heart will be heaving sighs and wiping tears by the end. I highly recommend!

The Wedding Dress (Review)

A year ago, I crossed something off my bucket list.

I attended a writing workshop in Tulsa, Okla., led by Rachel Hauck.

It was a cool day, because I met a couple of neat writers, got some ideas (I'm really a non-fiction writer who dreams of writing a novel) and met Hauck.

Basically, I got to sit at her feet (OK, it was at a table in a church's meeting room), and listen to her talk writing and how she got lots of her ideas.

She also talked about writing a book a book about a wedding dress that fits four women - kind of a "traveling pants" meets romance and bridal wear.

Kind of a cool concept. (Although, I'm still waiting for the vampire Amish tale the workshop participants kept joking about.)

Well, fast forward - a year later, I had the opportunity to review The Wedding Dress - the book Hauck talked about in the workshop.

A book about four women - who all fit inside the dress WITHOUT alteration.

Spanning multiple generations, Hauck crafts a tale that unites a group of women - three still living - showing their common interests, ties and faith. She also weaves in a hint of mystery and intrigue (and a really interesting character wearing purple!).

It's a fun book. In the beginning the dialogue jumps back and forth between Charlotte and the original owner. We see similarities to their struggles for love and acceptance. As it continues, we meet the other two owners and see how they are all linked together by the dress and more.

Like other books I've read written by Hauck, the novel's characters are enjoyable and the plot captures your attention.

On the scale of one to five, I give this book a four.Fun and humorous, The Wedding Dress would make a great "tuck in your bag" on a vacation or "rainy day" read.

Four Great Stories in One

It seems like I'm practically gushing about each of the books I reviewed lately and this is no exception. Rachel Hauck's newest book tells the story of a wedding dress that is almost magical, finding its own way to brides that need it. The Wedding Dress 'takes the stories of each of the four women who have worn this magical dress and weaves them together in to an intriguing novel. As the stories of the dress and its wearers evolved I found myself more engaged in the story with each turn of the page. Hauck blends historical fiction, modern fiction and a bit of suspense into a story told so beautifully I didn't want the book to end. It's one of those stories that you wish was really true, a story so compelling that you long to be a part of it.

This is the first book I've read by Rachel Hauck and if her others are anything like this one, I think I'll be adding more of her books to my library.

Suducing the Spaniard....

I don't give many five stars but this one deserves it. Here Clare Connelly has written a emotional story of young love gone wrong. When Carrie was only seventeen she had a huge crush on her much older step-brother, Gael. But she, in her eyes was not thin, or pretty enough for him. When she witnessed the unthinkable she became like her mother. Using men only for sex. Now years later she and Gael are back in the same area. What will she do to show him that all she wants is just sex? This story had a lot going for it being under a hundred and fifty pages. Clare did it brilliantly. And with my favorite type of ending, HEA.

An unfortunately flawed introduction.

As a programmer, when I first read this book through I thought that it wasn't the best written of the Dummies books, but it was a reasonable introduction that gave a good overview of some of the basics. However, having seen people with no experience of programming at all try to work their way through this book, I've also noticed that the author has sometimes failed to really explain himself in the clear and thorough way that the Dummies books are so good at, and has lost sight of who the book should be aimed at - people with NO experience of programming at all.

My biggest gripe of all is with the use of variable names, on two counts. Firstly, he'll sometimes use variable names that simply won't make any sense - names that have absolutely nothing to do with what the variable is actually being used for within the code. While this doesn't cause a problem with programming, and certainly won't confuse an experienced programmer within such simple coding, it can completely throw people who haven't used a programming language before - it adds unnecessary confusion to code that's mainly intended for complete beginners.

It's also a bad introduction to naming conventions for anyone who'll write code for others to use, as people SHOULD try to make their choices of variable names make sense. It's a bad idea even if nobody else EVER reads it, because if you decide to come back to your code after a year, who knows if you'll still remember what "boing" was supposed to be?

The second issue I have is that he'll repeat the confusion for newcomers by sometimes naming things too similarly. Experienced programmers, again, won't have a problem with this; but for the newcomers who're trying to become familiar with the language, it can confuse them - this is made more likely by the fact that many will already be struggling to come to terms with the code they're working through. Having a variable called test$ and a routine called [test] may seem fine to experienced programmers, but when test$ is actually the value of a radio button, there are much plainer and easier names that the variable could have been given to help avoid confusion for the novice programmer. It could simply have been thought through better, and more consideration should have been given with regard to who this book was intended for.

When compared to some of the other Dummies texts, most of which people could work through from top to bottom without needing much or any assistance, this one falls short of the mark. Beyond just the confusion created by bad choices of names for variables and functions, some of the explanations are unclear - or leave some elements completely unexplained - leaving the unfamiliar programmer out of their depth, with no experience to call on to deduce what the commands or code may actually be doing.

In the end, I simply wouldn't recommend this book to anyone who is trying to learn programming from scratch on their own. With some help, it provides a place for programmers to build, but too often the people I've seen work through this have ended up FEELING like Dummies as they became baffled and lost off by the book's sometimes careless style.

I just finished a course in object-oriented programming (Java) as part of a master's program in information systems management. Yeah, I aced it, but not without a lot of help from professional programmers. Trouble was, I couldn't understand Java because I had no programming experience; even the textbook, Head First Java, assumes prior programming experience. HFJ read like the proverbial Greek. (Trust, I will let my school know they need to revamp this part of the program.)

Now, I'm doing a course related to software frameworks, so this program isn't gonna get any easier.

So I went out and bought Beginning Programming for Dummies, and it hasn't disappointed. It clearly breaks down the languages BASIC, Revolution and C++, and presents the fundamentals of logic and programming in an uncomplicated way. This book is one giant ephiphany. "Oh, that's was a string is! Wow, is that was .NET is designed to do? Holy moly, loops are really that simple?" Before reading this, I had no idea that programs in differing langugages could be stored on Dynamic Link Library (DLL) files and linked together into a larger program using Visual Basic. I'd heard of DLLs, but had no idea what they were.

I work for an IT integration firm in an administrative position, and now I feel like what this company does has been somewhat demystified.

I usually don't comment on books on this site, but if you want to get a good overview what computer programming is all about before you delve into the programming language of your choice, do yourself a favor and buy this book.

Really a book on service societies and "mutual" seduction.

This small book based on the authors Ph.D is a small gem. It off course tell the story about the male hosts catering in dreams for their female audience, but that is in my opinion just a very small part of what the book is about. The book is way more an empirical "grounded" discussion of modern service and service societies. The book draws on a significant amount of literature inside critical Anthropology and theory, without ever becoming difficult to read. As an ethnographic study I hope it will be read inside my own field of organizational behavior and theory, and in particular service management. Where it can be as an important book as "the managed heart"

My only critical comment is, that a few places the analysis and explanations tilt towards, what I call an asymmetrical and "feminist privilege" performance analysis. where the wording and dynamics highlighted makes the female patrons "victims of exploitation" - despite the fact using the same criteria of analysis would make the male host - the exploited part. That said the book always comeback to its fundamental line of analyzing the performed lies, feelings and embodyment in the mutual seductive process, which makes it such an important book for our understanding of all services.

In this enlightening sociocultural chronicle, journalist Pendergrast (For God, Country & Coca-Cola) focuses on the popularity of coffee, especially in the Western Hemisphere. Coffee-drinking came late to the New World but was embraced almost immediately. It accompanied settlers on their way west (Native Americans referred to it as "black medicine") and was popular with soldiers in the Civil War and both world wars. Pendergrast's book is filled with stories about the rise (and fall) of coffee dynasties like Hills Brothers and Folgers and of how the fledgling advertising industry helped promote each. The book concludes with the advent of specialty firms like Starbucks. While it lacks the extensive industry overview that characterizes Gregory Dicum and Nina Luttinger's The Coffee Book: Anatomy of an Industry from Crop to the Last Drop (LJ 4/1/99), it provides substantial background on coffee production as well as making an entertaining yet serious attempt to understand the popularity of the beverage. Decent book about coffee, but there is a better one available for free!

If you are a new coffee fanatic, and are in to roasting your own coffee and wanting to learn all you can about coffee, go ahead and purchase this book, Pendergrast does a pretty good job of covering the coffee world from harvest to cup, and it is in an easy to read format. But I must say, I felt it was basically a "Cliff Note" of the all encompassing "Coffee Bible" that William H. Uker wrote almost a hundred years ago. Ukers book is titled "All About Coffee", and is the acknowledged complete work of every aspect of the coffee world. You can sometimes find the out of print book on Ebay, but it is usually over $150 for a worn out copy! I found that you can go to "Project Gutenberg" on the web and read the entire book, with all the full color hand drawn pictures, absolutely free of charge! Do it! You won't regret it!

History of Coffee is fascinating

Came across this book at a coffee bar and it piqued my interest in coffee. Lengthy, so for time I read some other books about coffee first. I've been brewing coffee in a basic way for years and never thought of trying to improve my coffee brewing methods. Now, I am brewing coffee better in so many ways! This book gives a good history of coffee, which includes a bit of how to brew. I love this book.

Harper Fox gets to spend every day doing what she loves best—creating worlds and stories for the huge cast of lovely gay men queuing up inside her head. She lives in rural northern England and does most of her writing at an old kitchen table in her back garden, often with blanket and hot water bottle. When not writing, she either despairs or bakes bread, specialities foccacia and her amazing seven-strand challah. If she has any other skills, she's yet to discover them. The Salisbury Key is her fifth published title.

A wonderfully written, emotionally powerful book.

I just finished The Salisbury Key by Brit m/m romance author Harper Fox. I've already emailed her with embarassing OCD efficiency. I may have gushed a little. But in a manly, intellectual way.

Life After Joe, the other book of Fox's that I read and loved, is similar in that it's about a very intense relationship that develops between two men after one of them suffers a loss--gradually revealing that the other one has also suffered. It's a fairly simple romantic structure, but The Salisbury Key adds onto that a compelling cloak-and-dagger plot that is only allowed to surface little at a time--creating a series of surprises toward the later part of the book that had my heart pounding.

Fox is a really superb writer. Elegant, classy, beautifully descriptive of the geographic region in the title--where Stonehenge sits shrouded in mystery on the Salisbury Plain. Her writing is also beautifully descriptive of the emotional journey of Daniel Logan and Lt. Rayne (I won't even give his first name--because that is one of the several delicious small surprises that pop out of the book, giving the reader added pleasure).

I don't usually focus on the sex in talking about my beloved romances: but I have to point out that I've never read more beautifully written examples than in Fox's books. They're explicit without, somehow, being graphic. What they manage to do is illuminate the passion behind the action. I can't quite describe it, but they are as integral to our understanding the story and the characters as any of the plot twists.

As addicted as I am to m/m romance novels, I have a single regret: that because of their very intentional and specific gay/erotic nature, they are automatically off limits for a great many people who would enjoy Fox's writing. But I guess those people have straight romances to read. Fine for them.

What I love about Harper Fox's work is that it has an unashamed almost poetic distillation of intensity.

Her books are dramatic to the tipping off point of melodrama, bleed romance into eroticism and are full of throat closing angst. And yet somehow they have a wonderful reality, this comes from the light touch within her writing which creates original,appealing characters.The sense of place the book's strong locations achieve,anchor the fast moving action.

The Salisbury Key joins A Midwinter Prince as my favourite from her excellent collection of work.

Before buying most of my books these days, I always take a look at the reviews and then get a sample to read on my kindle. Reviews are of course highly subjective and you never know what is motivating any one reviewer, positive or negative or if maybe their taste is simply different than yours. Regardless, because I know the type of book I like, I put off looking at this book for a long time, before actually trying it. As soon as I started reading the sample, I couldn't believe I had not checked it out sooner. I thought this book was wonderful. A complex storyline with a solid mystery, charismatic characters who drew me in, and even a touch of the arcane. I like a good love story, and part of why I never looked too closely here was that several reviews mentioned the romance not being a strong point. I found that I completely disagree. There were not one, but two beautiful stories of love here for the main character. One of love lost, but another of love found. The author wrote them in such a way, that both relationships were incredibly strong and legitimate, and yet so completely different from one another that there was no competition or detraction from either relationship if compared to the other. In my experience that is a rare thing. This book is a keeper, and I highly recommend it.
