Good book, but could be more interesting

Keming Yang mentioned that "each choice of a research topic or strategy is a choice of what kind of perosn to be", and he chose this one instead of the "comparative democratic development in Russia and China". I guess it might be more fruitful if he did otherwise. A sociology perspective on the entrepreneurship couldn't seem to bridge the gap between "institution-entrepreneurship" and "entrepreneurship-development". Institution hole and double entrepreneurship had been well addressed in the rent-seeking and profit-seeking literatures, not much excitement here.

There are three other problems:
1. the non-comparative nature of the topic took away the author's potential advangage of a cultural perspective;
2. it under-estimates the structural change in China's institutional reform, especially in recent years;
3. the focus on Institution hole and double entrepreneurship blurs the theoretical thrust of the argument of "institution - entrepreneurship - development".

Yang provides an understanding of what entrepreneurs face in China. A vital topic if China's economy is to continue to grow strongly. He explains how people cope with the business and political situation. The Chinese Communist Party often rules by policy and not by law. Policies are usually more flexible and consistent with some overall political system than a rigid codification of law. Another key advantage is that policies can be easier for ordinary folk to understand; rather than some legalese.

The book also has several case studies of Chinese entrepreneurs. Well, some successful ones, at least. He doesn't really talk much about those who have failed. But this is scarcely any different than all those breezy business books about starting up in the US. Few of those ever chronicle the many American failures. Capitalism does have a downside, in the human toll of these failures, in any country where it is practised.

This is the best book that I have read on entrepreneurship in China. Actually, I just happen to read the review on this book by Professor Douglas Guthrie (New York University) published at Contemporary Sociology, which is very positive. In my view, everyone who wants to understand China's amazing economic achievements should read this book; it is not just about entrepreneurship; it is about how different kinds of Chinese people (officials, ordinary people, business owners, of course) behave as well. It is full of insights and conceptual innovations. I don't know whether it will become a classic, but I am pretty sure many people will still find this book useful many years later.

Nostalgia never looked so good!

I received my Atari 2600 for Christmas of 1978 and spent the next 4 years entrenched in everything Atari - from the games, to the manuals that were included, to the boxes themselves. Spending all of my spare change in the arcade during the days, I'd come home and play my Atari for hours before bedtime: Dodge 'Em, Night Driver, and Combat were my first. Then came the onslaught of arcade conversions; Space Invaders, Missile Command, Asteroids. Going to the mall or department store meant another chance for me to be able to look over those wonderful boxes and stare at the artwork hinting at the wonder that they contained. This book takes the reader back to those days and the overall magic and wonder of the early home videogame years. It's more than just pictures of box art - it's stories, personal accounts, history, and informative facts about the early world of Atari. This book is a must buy if, like me, you were in your "prime" years during the late 70's and early 80's. It is going to find a permanent place on my coffee table and will be a source for conversation for many years to come. Thanks to everyone who put this book together!

Awesome trip down memory lane.

I just received this book after preordering it a while ago. All I can say is that I'm extremely impressed so far. The book is much bigger than I expected and the quality is, in my opinion, very good. As for the content? I love it. I've been transported back to my childhood as the memories have been flooding back all day. If you're a fan of Atari and a nostalgic nerd, then you owe it to yourself to check this book out.

Spectacular Walk Down Memory Lane

Those of us old enough to have started gaming on the Atari 2600 remember that those graphics tended to be somewhat...underwhelming. Playing classic games like Adventure, Combat, Circus Atari and Superman it helped if your imagination could fill in the blanks, and nothing helped that process along like the packaging your game came in. The art on the boxes and instruction manuals laid the foundation for the worlds that the Atari's processor could never actually display on screen.

I've been saying for years that I'd love a collection of that art in a book and I'm thrilled that someone finally did it. Anyone who spent the late 70s hooked on these games should love seeing the high quality reproductions of the art and learning some history about the talented folks who made them all happen. If you're one of us early Gen-Xers this book is for you.
