About the Author
William Warren, American by birth, has lived in Thailand since 1960 and has traveled extensively throughout Asia over the years. He is the author of more than 50 books on architecture, tropical gardens and history, among them Jim Thompson: The Unsolved Mystery, a biography of the man who made Thai silk famous; The House on the Klong, Heritage Homes of Thailand, Thai Style, The Tropical Garden, Balinese Gardens, Singapore: City of Gardens and Phuket: Pearl of the Orient.

Photographer
Renowned Australian travel photographer Jill Gocher has worked in Asia for many years and her photographs have been published in books and magazines in many countries around the world. An exquisite encyclopaedia of the world's stunning colonial hotels.

Having been interested in tracking down the remaining stamp of the Western colonialism on present-day Asia for close to a decade, I ordered this book immediately after I came across it in a magazine.

The accomodation, the theme of this book, is absolutely one of the few ways left for those who are interested to savour the good old and short-lasting colonial era on their own today.

Unlike South Korea which has struggled, since its depature from the Japanese rule, to stamp out the Japanese influence both materially and mentally, most of the Asian countries have retained the Western colonial stamp and have learned to utilise it as one feature of tourism.

This book covers most of the internationally- famed hotels in both South and South-East Asia dating back to the colonial era.

Every page is beautifully coloured looking like they have been freshly and directly from the authors' camera.

Each hotel's visual introduction is accompanied by a detailed commentary on the history of the hotels.

Hotels featured here range from Peninsula in Hong Kong, the Strand in Burma to top-tier hotels in both Vietnam and Cambodia.

My conclusion is this is not merely a picture guide of old hotels but a highly detailed, academic and entertaining encyclopaedia of colonial hotels with a cornucopia of tips on travelling.

I highly recommend this book for the above reasons, but not 5-star evaluation due to the book's rather bulky size and heavy weight(If the book were much more compact it would be a perfect addtion to your list of things to take with you on your trip.

Any art library strong in commercial architecture and design needs ASIA'S LEGENDARY HOTELS, a focus on the histories and presentations of some of Asia's most famous hotels, from Raffles in Singapore to the Ananda in the Himalayas. From the building of the structures to the famous people who occupied the buildings over the decades, ASIA'S LEGENDARY HOTELS also makes a fine coffee table addition for any who enjoy travel, and may even be considered for public libraries strong in travel pieces mixed with visual displays of structures.

Very academic

This is written by hardcore academics, for hardcore academics (and for their students). Lots of esoteric sociological/philosophical terms, well-divided into essays by specific subjects. Note two of the quotes that Amazon provides:

'I would recommend to all serious students who wish to begin studying this country.' - China Perspectives

'Should be read by all serious scholars of contemporary China.' - Asian Affairs

The key word is SERIOUS. It is excellent for its purposes, but this is not for a casual reader who wants to learn about Chinese culture and politics.

If you need it for class, then you need it for class (though maybe not really, depending on how your prof runs things), and it's very informative and well-written. You will learn a lot. Otherwise, skip this book.

A Fun cosy

Birmingham, Alabama's Southern Sisters are tired after just returning home from spending two weeks in Warsaw, Poland celebrating the wedding of Patricia Anne's daughter. However, their idyllic breather ends even before it begins when cousin Luke "Puke" Nelson asks for their help. Apparently, Virginia, Luke's wife of forty years, left him for a house painter, Holden "Monk" Crawford. Reluctantly Patricia Anne agrees to accompany her more enthusiast sibling Mary Alice in finding the runaway.

Mouse and Sister as Patricia Anne and Mary Alice are more commonly known trace Virginia and Monk to a remote church on Mount Chandler. However, instead of finding the runaways, the Southern Sisters find the corpses of two murdered people, neither being Monk or Virginia. As they continue their inquiries, Sister and the local Sheriff seem stuck on one another. Ultimately, they locate a dead Monk, but they still have not found the missing Virginia.

Fans of the series will fully enjoy the seventh cozy in the Southern Sisters series. MURDER CARRIES A TORCH centers more on Mouse's humorous asides with the reader about the excessive behavior of Sister than on detective work. Still, that should not surprise fans of the series, as that is the essence of all the novels.

Another Fantastic Southern Sisters Mystery Y'all!

Have you ever had your two favourite aunts go away for a year on an adventure....then have them return to share with you the trouble they got themselves into. This is what reading an Anne George Southern Sisters mystery is like. These books make me laugh until I can't breath, bring tears to my eyes and keep me on the edge of my chair until the last tale has been told. Murder Carries a Torch is indeed a visit with those whacky relatives. You've got dead snake-charmers, purple boots, angel-sightings, pukey cousins, disappearing wives and the most loveable sisters in mystery today. The fact that one of the the ladies is now 'wired' is a bonus...the part describing Patricia Anne's experience with e-mail 'spam' is hilarious, and I was smart enough this time round not to have a mouthfull of anything when I read it. Like the rest of the books in this series, Torch is pure heaven. The only downside here is the wait for the next one!

Solid Gold for Mystery Lovers!

Anne George continues to top herself with each Southern Sisters mystery. I became interested in them initially, because I, too, had an Aunt Sister, but the lively plots and characters keep me coming back again and again. There are very few books that make me laugh out loud, but these do and in particular, her latest entry. Patricia Ann and Mary Alice get mixed up with snake-handling holy rollers and all hell breaks loose! I could not put it down and literally read all night. Don't miss this one!

There is some bad advise in this book

There is some bad advise in this book.
Please do not go straight to an SNRI for someone with depression and anxiety. That's how primary care providers get patients hospitalized.
Several medication suggestion in this book are not ideal.
Otherwise good overview.

Bush, Ph.D., ABPP, ABN is the Director of Long Island Neuropsychology, P.C., a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Stony Brook University School of Medicine, and a neuropsychologist with the VA New York Harbor Healthcare System. He is board certified in neuropsychology and rehabilitation psychology, a fellow of the American Psychological Association and the National Academy of Neuropsychology, and Past President of the National Academy of Neuropsychology. He has published 9 books, 2 special journal issues, and numerous articles and book chapters, and has presented at national and international conferences.

Great book

This book has actually replaced my current textbook in an ethical issues course. It is rather complete and easy to understand, and provides useful examples of hypothetical cases to address the many issues that one can face in the forensic field. In addition, the book presents various solutions and discusses an ethical decision making model that should be helpful to all. I recommend this book to any forensic psychology student.

I thought this was going to be a dry text and that it was going to be one that I would have to battle my way through but no it was very well written and interesting. I actually see myself referring back to this book in my career later on, well worth keeping.

Albee on Love

When he accepted the Tony Award for Best Play in 2002, Edward Albee said he was grateful that there was room on Broadway for a play about love. In 2003 we can be grateful that Overlook Press has published The Goat, or, Who is Sylvia?
I was fortunate to see The Goat on Broadway both with the original cast (Mercedes Ruehl and Bill Pullman) and with the replacement cast (Sally Field and Bill Irwin). While both casts were superb, what was so satisfying was that the text allowed for two very different interpretations. Having now read the play, its greatness is even more apparent.
The story is a simple, though unusual, one: Martin, a successful and famous architect lives in domestic harmony with his wife Stevie and their gay son Billy. Then one day Martin falls in love with Sylvia, who happens to be a goat. Albee uses three scenes to tell his story: 1) Martin's confession to his best friend Ross about his new love; 2) Stevie's confrontation with Martin over Sylvia (whom she finds out about in a letter from Ross); and 3) the tragic, yet also hopeful (to me at least), conclusion.
In this play Albee has harnessed the wordplay of drawing room comedy to the intense emotions of tragedy. In their confrontations, Stevie and Martin switch from emotional outbusts to clever repartee and back again. They even have the wherewithal to compliment each other on their bon mots.
The audacity of this strategy and Albee's success in bringing it off, apparent on stage, become even clearer after reading the text. His intricate constructions and verbal virtuosity lend a musical feeling to the work, as if every shift of mood and emotion were part of a larger composition. Albee rings changes not only in the lives of his characters, but also in the perceptions and emotions of his audience. With this work Albee has given us a new hybrid form of drama: the drawing room tragedy. In this respect it reminds me of an earlier work, The Lady from Dubuque, which employed a similar strategy, albeit less effectively in my opinion.
This play also marks the debut "the son" as a speaking character. Sons have been part of Albee plays before: in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf he is imaginary; in A Delicate Balance dead and buried; in Three Tall Women he is a silent witness at his dying mother's bedside; and in The Play About The Baby, while he is both born and kidnapped, he is never seen (if he even exists in the first place).
But in The Goat Stevie and Martin's son Billy is a vital presence. For the first time an Albee family feels complete. The imaginary child has been given form and voice. Billy's coming to grips both with his own homsexuality and with his father's new love leads to a moment in the last scene that sent chills of delight and terror up and down my spine each time I saw it performed. Never less than theatrically potent, Albee achieves a new intensity here that was thrilling.
With The Goat Albee has given us not only one of his best works, but also one of the best plays of recent times. I must admit that I never thought any of his works could rival my affection for Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf. But The Goat is its equal and leaves me eagerly anticipating where Edward Albee plans on next going.

Another great play by Edward Albee

Welcome to the quagmire of human sexuality. "The Goat, or Who is Sylvia?" (a 2002 Tony Award winner for Best Play) places the audience in the jury box. The accused are Martin, his wife Stevie and their gay teen-aged son Billy. Albee challenges us to question the nature and meaning of love. Can love and shame coexist? Who defines normal? Who, or what, has been betrayed? Who decides which behaviors are acceptable? After the evidence has been presented and issues debated we realize that this play isn't about bestiality or infidelity, but rather intolerance, nonconformity and the arbitrariness of societal standards. Does Albee provide any answers? No, he insists, as he always has, that you find your own. A truly great play.

Edward Albee is without question the finest American playwright we've yet had, and all through The Goat, particularly in the second and third acts, he's in top form. Structurally, it's as perfect a tragedy as anything penned by Shakespeare, perhaps even by Sophocles. And structure and form are very much what seem to be at stake. What was Chagall's famous (partially correct) quote? Something like "It doesn't matter if it's a chicken or a barn door or a red blotch - just that something be there." In The Goat, Albee inserts a goat into a tragedy of marital infidelity, and manages, in spite of it's absurd nature, to be not only hilarious, but deeply moving. The oddness of it all is set off magnificently by the fact that Martin is as conscientious, rational, and aware of linguistic connotations as nearly any character you'll see upon a stage. And as always, Albee's dialogue is masterful, his touch deft, his ear damn near infallible. If I had to take one Albee play, besides V. Woolf this might be it.
