In his exhaustive treatment of the world's most complex religious organization, Reese, a Jesuit priest who has written about the U.S. Catholic hierarchy (Archbishop: Inside the Power Structure of the American Catholic Church, Harper San Francisco) approaches his subject from a sympathetic yet critical perspective and manages to accomplish two tasks. He describes what is, based on more than 100 interviews with Vatican insiders, and he prescribes what might be, based on his own sense of the church's place in the contemporary world. Though he avoids discussing personal lives of curial officials, he humanizes a vast bureaucracy with an occasional bit of gossip and a few revealing Vatican jokes. For example, one official offered a careerist's recipe for survival in the Roman curia: "Don't think. If you think, don't speak. If you speak, don't write. If you think and if you speak, don't write. If you think and speak and write, don't sign your name. If you think and speak and write and sign your name, don't be surprised." Reese's detailed account of what goes on inside a papal conclave will greatly simplify the work of journalists and teachers during the election of the next pope.

One need not be Catholic or even religious to appreciate this fascinating look into the Vatican, an institution with worldwide influence. Reese, a Jesuit priest and political scientist, provides detailed information, much of which is not available elsewhere, on the internal workings of the Vatican both as city-state and the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church. That information ranges from how popes are elected and how each of the Vatican offices operates to how the Vatican bank functions and what sort of fire department the Vatican has. Reese also offers insights, e.g., that Cardinals tend to elect an older pope to avoid a long reign, and notes procedures for deposing an insane or otherwise incapacitated pope. With its wealth of information, historical background, and analysis, Reese's work should be an important addition for a variety of libraries. An Enlightening Look Behind the Vatican�s Closed Doors

One young girl wrote in a book report "This book tells me more about hippopotamuses than I wanted to know." Unless you have a special interest in the Vatican inside story, this book may also tell you too much. But since the Roman Curia of the Catholic Church is one of the three most efficient corporate structures in the world, and since its work touches the lives of a billion Roman Catholics (and much of the rest of the world as well), and since its failings have been at the center of controversy in the Catholic world, the book is important. It is a well written and exhaustive summary of how the central Catholic government is structured and makes its decisions. The author, who has written on church governance at all levels, is a recognized expert in the field. Despite the controversial nature of the topic Reese treats the Curia fairly and objectively. Those who complain about the Curia should read this book, for while many of their complaints may be justified, they might be surprised at the amount and complexity of the work the Vatican does, the care and dedication with which they try to do it, and the problems and difficulties they labor under. The section on the internal culture of the Curia is particularly enlightening, and the author's concrete and professional suggestions for reform are valuable.

Ever wonder what it'd be like to be a Vatican bureaucrat?

Thomas Reese, Jesuit professor and journalist, has carved a very narrow niche for himself as an author, explaining the organizational mechanics of the Catholic church. Most people would find his books to have far too much detail, but there are a few, like me, who are curious about what really happens behind the closed doors of the Catholic administrative apparatus. His 1989 book, "Archbishop," described how dioceses are run, and "Inside the Vatican" describes how the Vatican functions. What decisions do cardinals actually make? What is it like to be a Vatican ambassador to a foreign country? What is it like to have a career as a Vatican bureaucrat? (One tidbit: No air conditioning!)
If these are things you've wondered about, this is the book for you. Reese approaches these things as though he were an anthropologist or a management consultant, with a keen eye for the nuances of interpersonal relationships within the Vatican bureaucracy. My only complaints are that the amount of detail can be overwhelming, and Reese sometimes gets bogged down in a wooden style of writing. It's best to start reading this book in the middle, because the beginning is rather dry. On the other hand, the anecdotes are a strong plus. To give one example, the story of John Paul II reprimanding the Archbishop of Denver to his face creates a mental image that is hard to forget.
The last chapter is the most provocative, where Reese suggests reforms that are both logical and unrealistic: He argues that Vatican administrators should not be allowed to become cardinals, which in papal elections would cause a monumental power shift toward those who are in closer touch with the laity. Reese suggests priests play a major role in selecting bishops, as was the case before the 1800s, in contrast to the current practice in which the pope appoints ultraconservative bishops who can't relate to anyone in their diocese.
According to Reese, the underlying problem is that the Vatican is more interested in doctrinal purity than keeping people in the church. Meanwhile the laity are voting with their feet, gravitating to pastors who ignore papal instructions, or leaving the church altogether.

Saved me a LOT of time!

Accurate transcriptions that saved me a lot of ear time. I'd never have figured some of these out on my own. One thing to watch for is that tracking multiple guitar parts across several pages can be tricky and require a lot of page flipping. Oh, well. Highly recommended.

Great tab of a great album. A must have (along with the CD) for all fans of Brad, Buck and James Burton. Will add to your lick vocabulary if you take time to get all the licks under your fingers. Will keep you busy for many months unless you are already fluent in this style of playing.

Stealing licks from Brad isn't so easy... :o)

I admit I struggle reading music, and with tabs. Arduous work, but profitable in the long term.
Brad is so talented and has put so many snazzy elements together in so many of his songs, that a note by note guide really helps put it together.
This book reveals some of his tricks that had me pretty well stumped until I saw the path in the tabs, and I still can't play 'em worth spit. Gotta practice more.

If you love Brad's music, or if you want to increase your arsenal of standard techniques, or if you are a strummer and want to add some dandy leads and snappy embellishment, or if you want great examples of just about every type of popular guitar work to practice and expand your universe, this is the ticket. This is a factual, hair-raising account of a 1983 Air Canada Boeing 767 that, due to a maintenance man's mathematical error in fueling and a fuel system computer malfunction, ran out of fuel and immediately lost all electrical power while in flight at a height of 41,000 feet. Captain Bob Pearson received many accolades for successfully landing the plane at an abandoned Canadian Air Force Base. The journalist authors tell the story of the 29-minute glide and the gripping real-life terror from the perspectives of the pilot, crew, air traffic controllers, and passengers. The book is well-written and has an excellent postscript which discusses the lengthy investigation, the issue of assigning blame, and the subsequent modifications made to procedures, checklists, and equipment. William Hoffer coauthored Midnight Express (LJ 4/15/77).

Top flight non-fiction suspense

I read this book while on a recent 10 hour trans-Atlantic flight to pass the time and kind of spice things up (e.g. turn my long flight into a Disneyesque "Roller Coaster of Death" ride, where you really know you're going to step off perfectly intact at the end).

This great non-fiction book gives a detailed recounting of Air Canada flight 143, which in 1983 ran flat out of fuel while at 41,000 feet over Middle of Nowhere, Manitoba. Yes, TRUE STORY! (Don't let the 41,000 feet scare you -- altitude is your friend when out of fuel).

The writers give a little biography of some of the key crew members and passengers, which was only somewhat interesting to me (however, I was very interested in the flying history/experience of the cockpit crew). The star of the story however, is the fuel-less Boeing 767 and the frantic efforts of the Air Canada team to get the plane on the ground safely.

Authors William and Marilyn Hoffer did an excellent job of providing the technical aspects of the aircraft and industry without ever going over my head. I felt like I understood at each stage of the story, why something had happened to the aircraft, and what the impact was. Ditto for the sequence of actions by the entire flight crew.

I'm assuming the reader has figured out that this wasn't a mass loss of life disaster (duh, there is even a previous Review by a person that claims to have been on the flight). Not wanting to give too much away, I'll merely add that many fortuitous "coincidences" in the tale were not lost on me. Such as: Captain Bob Pearson was a hobby glider pilot (767s are not designed to "glide", but when in such straits, every bit helps), and, another occupant on the plane "vaguely recalled" a possible landing sight. There were many such bits and pieces which fit together and kept this from become a huge disaster. I was AMAZED at how many things were outside of the pilots scope of training and flight manual contingencies (This was 1983. Things are better now.?).

Plenty of white-knuckle moments. There were even some injuries . . . the source of those is a bit of irony. A few slow parts to the book, but then back to the cockpit and the excitement. The suspense becomes literally heart-pounding as the plane sinks ever closer to the ground.

It's an easy, quick, and rather educational read. Pick up a copy for your next long flight.

I read this one years ago and it still gives me chills.

I read this book when i was 15...7 years ago, and i still remember it like it was yesterday. Awesome book. Very detailed account of the true story of Flight 143. Great portrayal of the people on the flight. Too bad it's not in print anymore...hope they can find a copy.

Boeing 767

I read the condensed version of Freefall via Readers Digest that was extracted directly from this book. It will keep your eyes glued to the pages as this is a true harrowing story. It precedes Capt Sully Sullenberger's similar scenario. Quick background --after graduating from college in Mechanical Engineering in Spokane, I went to work on the Boeing 767 assembly line in Everett Washington in 1989 as a Tool & Production Planner. And had always been an aviation buff. That same year I had joined the Boeing glider club and then that same year (1989) a family member gave me the R.D. copy of this story that ran in a condensed format. When flying a glider that year, I learned that you only get 1 chance to land. I walked onto the 767 daily and it is a large twin aisle jet. It is not enough to say that it is remarkable that Capt Pearson happened to be a glider instructor outside of his flying profession ( as I recall in the story). As Capt Pearson details, Air Canada had just transitioned from U.S. gallons to Metric & had recently ordered their jets to Metric fuel calibration (Liters). When the 767 lost all fuel at 41,000 feet, he was now flying a 130 ton glider. I won't spoil it from here. Extremely exciting action. For me the only other books close in gut-wrenching action is Nimitz Class by Patrick Robinson and Hunger Games.

About the Author
Dr. Tom Johnston is the Chief Scientist at Asserted Versioning, LLC, which has developed a middleware product which supports the standard theory of bitemporal data, and which also implements the Asserted Versioning extensions to that standard theory. He is the co-author of Managing Time in Relational Databases (Morgan-Kaufmann, 2010). He lives in Atlanta, Georgia.

Randall Weis, founder and CEO of InBase, Inc, has more than 25 years of experience in IT and IT management, specializing in enterprise data architecture. Weis' technical expertise is in sophisticated, multi-tiered systems. He has designed logical and physical data models and implemented several high profile, very large database (VLDB) systems in the financial and insurance industries. These systems have had very stringent performance and real-time history requirements. His software development company, InBase, Inc., has developed software and Web sites used by some of the nations largest companies. Weis has been a presenter at various user groups, including Guide, Share, Midwest Database Users Group and Camp IT Expo. His technique for modeling history, retro activity and future dating has been reviewed and approved for the physical implementation of IBM's Insurance Application Architecture (IAA).

Old-School College Text Book

No doubt about it, this is an old-school college text book with hard cover and durable binding.

This book is no light read and is focused on the design and management of relational database tables using uni-temporal and bi-temporal data primarily in a business setting such as healthcare systems utilizing transaction processing.

Objectives as mentioned in the book:

* Seamless Access to Temporal Data -- One objective of this book is to describe how to manage uni-temporal and bi-temporal data in relational databases in such a way that they can be seamlessly accessed together with current data.

* Encapsulation Of Temporal Data Structures and Processes -- A second objective is to describe how to encapsulate the complexities of uni-temporal and bi-temporal data management.

* Enterprise Contextualization -- A third objective of this book is to explain how to implement temporal data management as an enterprise solution.

* Internalization of Pipeline Datasets -- The final objective of this book is to describe how to bring pending transactions into their production tables that are their targets, and how to retain posted transactions in those same tables.

Working with temporal data on a daily basis I find this subject interesting and this book relevant to my needs but I can see where this subject matter would apply to a niche market.

This textbook is not for the casual reader and it assumes that the reader has a level of database skills already in place, has a familiarity with temporal data, some familiarity with relational database tables, and assumes the reader has some SQL coding skills or is familiar with the syntax.

There are many examples throughout the book and all examples are in black & white with diagrams or coding examples; there are no glossy photos. Although I have not yet been able to go through the entire book I can see that I will benefit from the information contained and apply it to my daily work.

This book is not for everyone and is not misleading in trying to sell itself as an all-in-one database development resource. The title says it all -- Managing Time in Relational Databases: How to Design, Update and Query Temporal Data

"You cannot escape temporal data"

When this book was published last year, I must admit that the data architect in me was excited that an advanced database text had finally come along that addressed some issues that every data modeler must face (or should face) once they have mastered the rudimentary. The bulk of published database related books discuss SQL, or usage of specific database products. And while more books are beginning to appear on shelves that address topics such as data modeling, this genre is certainly in need of more texts that address the full spectrum of database usage.

Despite the weightiness of this 400-page effort, which required quite the journey (be forewarned), this book is one of the most painstakingly detailed technology efforts that I have read in quite some time that goes to great lengths in making sure the reader understands the material that is presented. No stones are left unturned along the way in the explanations of the authors on how to design, update, and query temporal data. In addition, the introductions that Johnston and Weis provide on temporal data management and asserted versioning in the first 150 pages are unrivaled in textbook publishing.

The authors state in their preface that there are four objectives of this book: (1) to describe how to manage uni-temporal and bi-temporal data in relational databases in such a way that they can be seamlessly accessed together with current data, (2) to describe how to encapsulate the complexities of uni-temporal and bi-temporal data management, (3) to explain how to implement temporal data management as an enterprise solution, and (4) to describe how to bring pending transactions into the production tables that are their targets, and how to retain posted transactions in those same tables.

The authors also note that as this book when to press, they started the process of converting their initial provisional patent application for Asserted Versioning into a patent application, although any non-software-vendor company is granted the right to develop its own temporal data management software based on the concepts presented in this book, as long as such software is for use only by the company and not sold, leased, licensed, or given away to any other company or individual. An implementation of the concepts presented by the authors, the Asserted Versioning Framework (AVF), is also being created by the authors.

Superb illustrations accompany explanations of concepts in all the right places. And the concluding chapter that the authors provide offers more substance than many lengthy white papers, offering an "ongoing research and development" section that presents a partial list of topics on which the authors are working, with topics such as use of AVF via Java and Hibernate of special interest to me. The asserted versioning glossary that spans over 50 pages of fine print and concludes the text is also highly appreciated. Well recommended to all data professionals.

Very academic

This is most certainly not a light read. It is as extremely (excruciatingly) detailed text book detailing design, theory, and management of relational databases using temporal data. This isn't a WROX or O'Reilly practical guide to development. It is an educational text book that will bring you back to your worst computer science/IT collegiate nightmares and a total snooze-fest.

That being said, it's still a great book full of great information and concepts that are abstract enough to be applied to a variety of different scenarios and software related problems.

It Could Be So Much Better...

I had heard about some complaints regarding this book so I was prepared for it to not be the best that it could be. The book in general is pretty good. There are a lot of listings of singles. What I really do like is that it lists the "B" side of the singles. That was a nice touch that another Record book I have does not have.

My real problem with the book is that it tends to cover mainly well-known artists. It would be nice if it would have covered more lesser known acts. I would imagine that lack of space was a main reason to not cover more artists, as it is a big book. My biggest gripe is that it sometimes leaves out artists that were supposed to be in the book. For instance, it tells you under the listing of David Crosby that you can also check out his recordings with The Byrds...but that group is not found anywhere in the book! Whoever did the editing did a bad job. It's a shame because it really could have been better than it is.

It's a pity that there is not one book that lists all or nearly all of the 45 records complete with the "B" sides. That would be the ultimate book. "American Records 1950-1975" is good but not great. Hopefully if another edition comes out some improvements will be made.

Insightful history, great images, somewhat crochety finish and unwieldy shape.

A beautifully produced book with a great history of architectural photography. The essays are clearly written and well-reasoned, and Mr. Herschman's path through the beginnings of the field, connecting folks I wouldn't have immediately fingered as architectural photographers, was a great read. Unfortunately, as we approach the contemporary (or contemporary for the date of publication), Mr. Robinson gets rather grouchy-old-man on the new photographers, somehow finding William Clift's brilliant juxtaposition of a new international style mirrorglass skyscraper and the more classical/beaux arts courthouse it reflects and fragments a failure, as it does not particularly document for us what the courthouse looks like. There are also no plates in color, a great omission.

However, the book is beautifully printed otherwise, and (with those few crochety moments aside) very well written. A last minor gripe is the proportion of the volume. Large and nearly square, reading it would be greatly aided by a lectern; it sits in the hand with all the grace of a beached octopus.
