ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

In Five Points, Mario Vargas Llosa creates a mural, rich in details and contrasts, in which characters from very different social circles find themselves affected by the terror provoked by the Shining Path, tabloid journalism, and the corruption associated with the ruling elite during Fujimori’s administration. The story begins when Rolando Garro, director of a sensationalist weekly paper, tries to destroy a successful mining engineer’s reputation with photos of him in a compromising situation. Everything starts to topple when moral poverty is exposed.

Five Points will be published simultaneously in Spain, Latin America, and in the United States in Spanish. Its release will coincide with the ceremony of homage to the author in the Vargas Llosa Biennial on the occasion of his 80th birthday. Alfaguara will celebrate this anniversary with the re-release of eight of his career’s most emblematic novels in a limited edition. Five Corners will also be available in digital edition, along with the rest of the catalog.

Novela que describe dos facetas del periodismo para atacar y condenar a personajes dentro de un régimen político y corrupto.

Esta novela narra la corrupción que engendra el poder en manos de dirigentes políticos inescrupulosos, dispuestos a ejercerlo hasta sus últimas consecuencias. Con su relato, Vargas Llosa nos demuestra una vez más su profundo conocimiento de la idiosincrasia de sus compatriotas peruanos. La trama involucra personajes muy diversos de la sociedad. Mientras la alta burguesía se deleita en los placeres que ofrece y compra el dinero, el proletariado sufre entre dos fuegos, en algunos casos sin salida posible, como la suerte corrida por el periodista Rolando Garro, el fotógrafo Ceferino y el declamador Juan Peineta. El abuso del poder puede ejercerse a través de la violencia física o la tortura psicológica. Aquí, Vargas Llosa describe con deleite los resultados nefastos del llamado periodismo amarillo, utilizado por funcionarios gubernamentales para atacar a sus adversarios y obtener sus fines maquiavélicos. Al final, el relato nos muestra la otra cara del periodismo serio y decente relacionada con el denuncia y condena de los corruptos.
Esta novela está escrita a la misma altura de las mejores del Premio Nobel de literatura, el Sr. Vargas Llosa. Con sus lectura descubrimos diversas facetas de la vida diaria de los peruanos, descritas con un lenguaje universal, adornado con términos regionales muy bien intercalados en la narración de los acontecimientos.

Es puro Vagas Llosa

Para mí esta novela era más una lección en historia que una obra de ficción. Claro que no es lo mejor que ha escrito Mario Vagas Llosa. Acabo de terminar su "El hablador" que me abrumó completamente. A pesar de eso, sí, me gustó mucho este cuento de Rolando Garro y su esquema de arrancar dinero de un rico hombre de negocios via la publicación de fotos lascivas en su revista amarilla, "Destapes." La corazón de la trama trata del Presidente Alberto Fujimori y su sicario Vladimiro Montesinos, jefe de Servicios Secretas, y sus escándalos políticos en el Peru al fin del siglo veinte. Para mí fue una revelación y para Vagas Llosa, quizás un poco de venganza. Pero, ¡cuidado! Esta novela no es para mojigatos a causa de muchas escenas muy explícitas.

M. L. Forman was born and raised in Utah and now resides in the foothills of the western Rockies. He tries to write as much as possible while still attending to his many other hobbies, such as fishing, camping, hiking, and almost anything that will allow him to enjoy the magic of nature. He is also the author of Slathbog s Gold and The Horn of Moran, the first two books int he Adventurers Wanted series.

Book review and important update on next novel

I just received the book which I had pre-ordered from Amazon. I could not put the book down from the moment I started reading the first page. As a warning to people expecting the same adventure format of the last three previous books, this book is slightly different. I think the author is trying to mature Alex and making him a stronger/ more forceful character than the more fearful character he was in the previous books. Alex acts as a leader in this book even though he is not strictly speaking on an adventure in this story. The action is virtually nonstop in this book. The bad guys are much stronger and smarter in this book and the challenges are at a much higher level for Alex now. My only regret with this book is I miss all the opportunities for treasure that were in his adventures in the earlier novels. My favorite part is where we finally find out what is the mysterious ring for from the first book. That has been driving me crazy with curiosity since the first book. In conclusion Alex is a more mature/ confident character than in the previous novels and the storyline is more mature to reflect this change. Be ready for a very exciting ride.

Update on next novel 10/6/2014: "The Axe of Sundering" was due to be out early 2015. I looked on the author's blog to see how things were going and unfortunately he has suffered a minor stroke affecting his left hand. I wish him a swift recovery and hope to see him back to his usual level of writing shortly.

Interesting, but leans heavily on other works

I first want to say that this series has had potential from the beginning. It is funny, moral, clean, and engaging, and it drew me in from the first. M.L. Forman clearly has a lot of creativity and originality--I'd just rather the series lose the copying from other literary masterpieces. I love the premise, Alex is pretty interesting, and there are just enough "plot balls" thrown into the air that I want to see how they fall. ("Plot balls" is something that a fiction teacher once told me about. Authors juggle plot balls--a plot here, a subplot here, and another one there--by throwing them into the story at different times and resolving them at different times as well.) I still want to know what's going to happen in "Adventurers Wanted," even though I have been somewhat disillusioned by the series by now.

There are some interesting premises in this series. I like the whole idea of adventurers, and the concepts are pretty unique--adventuring bags (oh, wait, that was in "Fablehaven"), wizardry, the Wall, and the Oracles. And, of course, Alex is a paragon. He is, after all, a dragon, a dragon lord, a dragon slayer (are those compatible?), part-human/dwarf/elf (with a good dose of missing parent syndrome), a superhero wizard, a healer, an adventurer, a prophecy-fulfiller, a mini-Oracle/sage, a warrior, a raven-whisperer, a shadow-slayer, and a perfect person in every way. I like a good hero, but there is such a thing as going too far. Plus, whenever he goes to the wall (the border of death in this book), it is consistently described as difficult to go to because it is so compelling, but he never has any trouble with it. Instead, he saves lots of people from being pulled over the wall into the shadow of death. If someone is perfect already, where in the world can he go? There is no potential for real character development. In this book, the character development is limited to discussions about Alex's identity as a wizard--meaning, he is a wizard and doesn't try to hide it at all even when his friends tell him to be subtle. The most discreet he gets is when he uses spells to wipe others' memory. Don't get me wrong--I love the adventures Alex has, and everything really is very exciting and is frequently well-written enough to hook me, but the two-dimensionality of the protagonist is frustrating for me as a reader. Maybe I'm not the target age for this series, but I like books that can honestly appeal to multiple age levels.

I also don't actually see Alex changing. He is a very two-dimensional character for me; he sometimes is [sort of] tempted to stray off of the right and moral path, but he easily conquers such temptations because he is a god. Or not. The closest he gets to real temptation is through the villains' spells, BUT because he is a true wizard (remember?) he can throw such spells off easily. But really, he doesn't actually have any real internal struggles, and he destroys everything in his path with no effort whatsoever. The worst that happens to him is that he gets really tired and has to take a nap for three days. Two of his acquaintances are violently killed and he emerges without a single scratch. Just major exhaustion.

The main problem with this series is that it often seems to openly plagiarize The Lord of the Rings series. We have seen the LOTR pattern since the beginning, ever since Alex faced off a troll and turned it to stone by exposing it to sunlight (refer to "The Hobbit"). He found a ring. He has been traveling with a band of adventurers--the Fellowship--, and in the first book, he fought a dragon with the elvish-made sword Moonslayer (Sting) while protected with a true silver (mithril) vest. The second and third books were a little better. There was, of course, a continuation of the past ideas and motifs, but Forman expanded his ideas a little. There were more adventures without so much obvious dependence on J.R.R. Tolkien's inspiration.

But this...

First of all, it is NOT alright to have a chapter entitled "Many Meetings." If we're talking about plagiarism, don't chapter titles count, too? That is one of the most memorable chapter titles in the LOTR series (The Fellowship of the Ring, Part II, Chapter I). And who isn't familiar with the song from the Peter Jackson LOTR movies that has the same title? If you don't believe me, go to this link: [...] I'd bet that you know it.

And then we have the cameo that Alex makes for a certain young lady. Is it just me, or is that from Eragon? Remember, that series blatantly plagiarized from LOTR as well, so this is borrowing from a borrower...right? Correct me if I'm wrong.

But the worst one is that we finally figure out that the ring Alex has been carrying around truly is "The One Ring to Rule Them All," meant for the Returning King [of Nezza].

Kindergarten-Grade 4-In a quiet hilltop monastery, eight monks tend a small farm, eking out just enough to survive. Old Brother Bartholomew, who looks after the apple grove, allows the deer to come in and eat the fruit, saying, "God will provide." When young and ambitious Brother Stephen arrives, he is appalled at the state of the orchard and secretly hopes that the elderly monk will die so that he can take it over and improve it. After his death, the younger man puts barbed wire on the fence and a large, beautiful buck is injured while trying to jump over it. The animal looks at Brother Stephen with familiar eyes and speaks to him, saying: "Your pride has caused this harm, my brother." From then on, "a great rush of light filled his heart and flooded his soul," and Brother Stephen shares the apples with the deer. When he grows old and a new young monk asks him why, Brother Stephen replies, "God will provide.… He always does." This simple parable is beautifully illustrated in muted colors and detailed landscapes that show the passing of the seasons and evoke a rural, old-world simplicity. The care of the orchards eventually passes to Brother Stephen, who sets feverishly to work, repairing the gate and strengthening the fence, topping it with barbed wire. When a noble stag injures itself on the wire, Brother Stephen understands that pride has distracted him from the true path of God. Lithuanian artist Kasparavicius extends the theme of humility with quiet, earth-toned scenes of life in a rustic monastery. Although this Christian fable becomes forthrightly religious when a voice from on high delivers a Bible verse and short sermon to the penitent Brother Stephen, the simple messages of generosity, compassion, and respect for the wisdom of the elderly reach out to an ecumenical audience. Teaches Respect & Gentleness

This is a delightful tale of how one young monk grows and learns by experience what he thought the older monks didn't know. In this way, it teaches young readers to respect older people because of the experience they have already gained in life, and that just because something is broken does not mean it would be better fixed.

A wonderful picture book for traditional Catholics of all ages

I was really charmed by this book. I bought it for my young children to have more good Catholic literature around, and this was an excellent addition. The illustrations are very charming, full of color and life and the book is beautiful just for this aspect alone. I was a little hesitant about the younger monk "wishing the older would die", but it sounded worse in the review than it read in the book, and it was something that was easily explained by the rest of the story. Has some excellent morals to the story, and I would highly recommend it to add to your library for your Catholic family. An excellent book that encourages the Catholic faith and shows it in a good light.

My kids love this story, I think you need to pay around $15-$20 for it though, don't over pay, we all get tricked in buying stuff because we desperately want Catholic material for our kids. These prices get ridiculous.

One need not be Catholic or even religious to appreciate this fascinating look into the Vatican, an institution with worldwide influence. Reese, a Jesuit priest and political scientist, provides detailed information, much of which is not available elsewhere, on the internal workings of the Vatican both as city-state and the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church. That information ranges from how popes are elected and how each of the Vatican offices operates to how the Vatican bank functions and what sort of fire department the Vatican has. Reese also offers insights, e.g., that Cardinals tend to elect an older pope to avoid a long reign, and notes procedures for deposing an insane or otherwise incapacitated pope. With its wealth of information, historical background, and analysis, Reese's work should be an important addition for a variety of libraries. Although the proliferation of detail may prove daunting to general readers, Reese communicates it in an engaging style that moves easily between gossip (in the best sense of the word) and academic formality. Readers who persevere through the detail will find the account entertaining as well as informative--with much to offer toward understanding not only the Roman Catholic Church but also other global, transnational organizations that play increasingly significant roles in contemporary politics, both global and local. An Enlightening Look Behind the Vatican�s Closed Doors

One young girl wrote in a book report "This book tells me more about hippopotamuses than I wanted to know." Unless you have a special interest in the Vatican inside story, this book may also tell you too much. But since the Roman Curia of the Catholic Church is one of the three most efficient corporate structures in the world, and since its work touches the lives of a billion Roman Catholics (and much of the rest of the world as well), and since its failings have been at the center of controversy in the Catholic world, the book is important. It is a well written and exhaustive summary of how the central Catholic government is structured and makes its decisions. The author, who has written on church governance at all levels, is a recognized expert in the field. Despite the controversial nature of the topic Reese treats the Curia fairly and objectively. Those who complain about the Curia should read this book, for while many of their complaints may be justified, they might be surprised at the amount and complexity of the work the Vatican does, the care and dedication with which they try to do it, and the problems and difficulties they labor under. The section on the internal culture of the Curia is particularly enlightening, and the author's concrete and professional suggestions for reform are valuable.

Ever wonder what it'd be like to be a Vatican bureaucrat?

Thomas Reese, Jesuit professor and journalist, has carved a very narrow niche for himself as an author, explaining the organizational mechanics of the Catholic church. Most people would find his books to have far too much detail, but there are a few, like me, who are curious about what really happens behind the closed doors of the Catholic administrative apparatus. His 1989 book, "Archbishop," described how dioceses are run, and "Inside the Vatican" describes how the Vatican functions. What decisions do cardinals actually make? What is it like to be a Vatican ambassador to a foreign country? What is it like to have a career as a Vatican bureaucrat? (One tidbit: No air conditioning!)
If these are things you've wondered about, this is the book for you. Reese approaches these things as though he were an anthropologist or a management consultant, with a keen eye for the nuances of interpersonal relationships within the Vatican bureaucracy. My only complaints are that the amount of detail can be overwhelming, and Reese sometimes gets bogged down in a wooden style of writing. It's best to start reading this book in the middle, because the beginning is rather dry. On the other hand, the anecdotes are a strong plus. To give one example, the story of John Paul II reprimanding the Archbishop of Denver to his face creates a mental image that is hard to forget.
The last chapter is the most provocative, where Reese suggests reforms that are both logical and unrealistic: He argues that Vatican administrators should not be allowed to become cardinals, which in papal elections would cause a monumental power shift toward those who are in closer touch with the laity. Reese suggests priests play a major role in selecting bishops, as was the case before the 1800s, in contrast to the current practice in which the pope appoints ultraconservative bishops who can't relate to anyone in their diocese.
According to Reese, the underlying problem is that the Vatican is more interested in doctrinal purity than keeping people in the church. Meanwhile the laity are voting with their feet, gravitating to pastors who ignore papal instructions, or leaving the church altogether.
