This is a great box set on Empath Healing.
All of the things, tips and guides that I need to know about how to best recharge and protect myself through setting healthy emotional and energetic boundaries to stop others from infiltrating my space are already included and well written inside. Marianne Gracie has done an incredible awesome job in compiling and creating this book.
This book is really a great resource for those who want to learn more about Emotional Healing & Survival Guide for Empaths and Highly Sensitive People.
The book is worthy of attention! I highly recommend this book to all.

Last 4 days ago I got this book and I'm really impressed with the amount of tips that this guide book has. More time I am frustrated about my future for that my friend suggests me the book. In this book the information is organized in a logical way that’s easy to access, read and understand. It is indeed a good read and I highly recommend this book to everyone.

A Quiet Masterpiece

As most probably know by now, Reasons To Be Happy is a sequel to Labute's earlier play Reasons To Be Pretty, and picks up 3 years later to take another look into the lives of it's characters Greg, Steph, Kent and Carly. A plot summary really doesn't do the play justice: Greg is now dating Carly, but Steph is ready to give things another shot with Greg. Kent is struggling to reconcile his naturally aggressive tendencies with his desire to be a decent/present father and to establish some kind of healthy adult relationship with his new girlfriend (who may be cheating on him). No, the true power of the play lies in the way Labute quietly explores how people make the same mistakes twice, attract dysfunction, and knowingly avoid making the right decisions.

As a stand-alone story, the play is funny, touching, and very entertaining. As a companion piece to Pretty, it takes on whole new dimensions, developing into something far more poignant and ambitious. Given that the play is a "sequel" audiences will likely expect a story that takes off in some dynamic new direction, or present us with major character transformations. But the fact of the matter is that most people don't change-- we talk, we plan, we pledge, we make resolutions, but if we're being really honest...? Stories about self-realization, growing up and coming of age only show the beginning stages. We can realize something dark or true that needs to change about ourselves, we often do, but how often do we take the hard path to make those changes? This story shows that while the desire to grow can be there, and the lessons can be learned, the struggle is often less exciting, less self-satisfying than simply continuing with life as usual.

It's what I admire so much about filmmakers like John Cassavetes, and fiction authors like W. Somerset Maughm-- they're not afraid to acknowledge moral ambiguity, the drama of inaction, and the persistence of personal stasis. In theatre, however, these kind of practitioners are quite a bit harder to find. REASONS TO BE HAPPY explores the simple imperfections of daily living and the profound struggles it's characters face in trying to make the simplest choices. It's a work of staggering power, sensitivity and understanding. `What I wouldn't give to see a theatre company perform this and PRETTY in a single evening.

Better Than I Expected

Let me say first, that I am in big Neil LaBute fan. As a theatre director, I own more of his works than any other playwright. I love the style of his writing. I like how he goes to dark places or touches subjects, that others may not venture to. Moreover, he makes it easy on directors, like myself, who have small casts, small sets and a limited budget.

I was directing Reasons To Be Pretty in West Virginia, when I heard that the sequel to our play, Reasons To Be Happy, was going up Off-Broadway. I was a little worried, at first. Reasons To Be Pretty was such a great script, that I knew I wanted to direct it, once I finished reading it, the first time.

I'm also not a fan of sequels, especially in the theatre world. I know some may disagree with me on this topic and I'm okay with that.

I ordered it from Amazon and I immediately opened it on the front porch and started reading it. I didn't bother to sit down, first. I had to know what happened to the four characters after Reasons To Be Pretty. I was pretty shocked at where the story went. I was also pleased that you didn't necessarily need to have read Reasons To Be Pretty to enjoy this play (although it certainly helps).

I passed the script to all four actors in our cast of Reasons To Be Pretty. Most of them were fairly pleased with it. So was I. Maybe I had low expectations, because of my view of sequels.

If you are a fan of Neil LaBute, you're going to want to add this one to your collection. If you are thinking about picking up this play, you may want to read the vanity trilogy first (The Shape of Things, Fat Pig and Reasons To Be Pretty) before purchasing Reasons To Be Happy. I think you'll have a better understand of what Neil LaBute is going for, in "Happy".

This play is calm. There are no out-of-the-blue twists. No crazy last minute turn of events. LaBute has begun to evolve as a playwright. This play is not an indication of that evolution come full circle, but part of the process.

LaBute revisits characters from his 2009 Tony-nominated "reasons to be pretty." I read an interview where LaBute explained that the idea to revisit characters came to him first, long before he had decided which play to revisit. It's a curious decision, to check in on characters from his most successful play. A daunting task. And he almost did it.

"Reason to be Happy" isn't bad. It may not be fair to judge this play while using its predecessor as a source, but there is a lot of backstory missing for those who are not somewhat familiar with "reasons to be pretty." LaBute writes with more control than he did four years prior. This dialogue is less choppy on the page, but it is still ripe with profanity. The writing is spotty. It's already so hard to feel any empathy for the play's protagonist, the ever-indecisive and infuriatingly ignorant Greg: it doesn't help that the writing is weak.

However, not everything is negative. "Reasons to be Happy" has its moments of hilarity, often from a character's ignorance, like Steph not knowing who Martin Luther King Jr. is. Sure, it sounds a bit like subtle racism, and yes, maybe that does diminish the charm of this stage rom-com-dram, but whatever. It's a look into the future. And LaBute will get there, some day.

A hit-and-miss from one of my favorite modern dramatists. I'm sticking around.

How ironic

Like many books, "Back of the Napkin" seems to have begun with a brilliant very short concept that someone (correctly) thought would sell like hotcakes if padded out into a full-length book. The author really does present significant insights, but the irony is that they would have been best summarized literally on the back of a napkin, rather than dragging them out into full book form. So it reads like a 300-slide PowerPoint presentation advocating brevity.

The sequel, "Unfolding the Napkin" (which I also read) is better thought out, serves more as a method, and contains more visual examples - but it still rehashes pretty much the same material as the first book in order to make its point, so reading both books was redundant in my opinion.

Skip powerpoint presentations, this is the way to go!

I recently read a book (The three value conversations) that outlined approaches to showing people/organisations (your customers) value by creating, elevating and then capturing it. It delved into the world of powerpoint presentations and how we cannot have effective conversations. Our audience essentially takes in the start of the presentation and some part of the end; the middle is essentially forgotten.

Back of the Napkin is the "how" and "why" of communicating with your customer, team or prospect. As the title suggests it is a very visual book with many images, acronyms and approaches on how to draw and have a conversation versus death by powerpoint. By traversing through the 6 "W" questions (i.e. What, Who, When, Why, Where and How), Dan Roam provides a stock set of templates on how to visualise this to provide impact in your conversation. Very well worth a read!

1. People like seeing other people’s pictures. In most presentation situations, audiences respond better to hand-drawn images (however crudely drawn) than to polished graphics; as long as you're credible that is
2. Look, see, imagine and show is the four step process to getting visual. You don't need to be a phenomenal drawer because there are templated approaches for any situation
3. Visual thinking is where it is at. We need to take advantage of our innate ability to see both with our eyes and our mind's eyes.

Should follow its own advice but don't let that stop you from getting a useful book

Using the principles of the book - keep it short. The book has 3 basic premises: (a) the RIGHT picture is worth a thousand words and (b) there are only a few basic picture types. Match the right picture to the right situation and you have powerful communications that can make the sale before losing the audience. The book does show you how to do this, and how to think about it. However, the book overthinks itself and could be better for following its own advice!

Longer, more traditional review.

Based perhaps on the simplicity of the title, some reviewers have expressed disappointment that this book does not provide a simple silver bullet than can turn chaos into strategic plans and market dominance, all in the space of a paper napkin. True, it does not do that. What it does provide is a bundle of silver bullets that attack specific problem types -- and then a whole bundle of "user's manuals", one for each type of bullet and each way you could use it, and that does create levels of complexity that defy the original premise.

The book sets up the basic frameworks (the types of story that need to be told and the ways in which those can be depicted). The author then creates a matrix (codex) of those combinations - well, OK, we can live with that ... But then we add another level of elaboration for each of the axes of the matrix. That is where it gets pretty complicated in there. To some extent one wonders whether this extra throw-weight comes from an effort to create a "serious" book rather than "powerful business presentations for dummies". The parcel of extra pages actually are useful once you get past the point of saying "well, yeah" to the basic premises, and once you wade through them carefully and long enough. Of course that is the anti-thesis of the original idea! That could put you off the whole project, but it would also be a mistake.

The book's themes and illustrations will definitely help you think about what message you are trying to sell to whom. In narrowing down your presentation to a few proven themes you will definitely force yourself to separate the essence from the "cool graphics" or the "tons to words to convince you that I really have spent a lot of time thinking about this". The truth is that if you have not convinced someone of your position, saying more of the same thing isn't going to convince them either; you need to say something that appeals to their understanding of the world. For the most part, a briefing is supposed to be short (hence "brief"), not a battle of attrition. You want a head-nod because people agree with you, not because they are going to sleep. The approaches laid out in this book will help you get positive buy-in rather than sleepy acquiescence, and in the end that will have lasting impacts.

Buy it, use it. Use the principles and frameworks. As you get familiar with them, the additional drill-downs will become clearer.

Ah made it mah business t'see they didn't have a minute's peace! Oh baby -- did I make THEM mizzuble!!

And that, folks, is the halfway mark of this tome, as Ol' Man 1941 gives way to Baby 1942...

It's non-stop action -- non-stop laughs too! -- as Al Capp puts his creations through the wringer. Abner is drained of his blood, painted bronze and sold as a statue, and (just about) ducks marriage on several occasions. Pappy is a universal punching bag. Salomey almost gets barbecued more than once. All three Yokums are briefly enslaved by Marryin' Sam...

And all that is nothing compared to the final grisly fate met by the great sportsman pig-breeder J. P. Fangsby. Not to mention the unfortunate Sir Cecil Cesspool. ("Cesspools are DEEP!! Cesspools have a certain AIR about them!")

'Dick Tracy' catches flak for violence but Al Capp had every bit as twisted an imagination as Lester Gooch!

So, why do so many people continue to adore this strip over three-quarters of a century after its debut?

First, you have to admire the sheer fecundity of Capp's imagination. Characters continue to pour forth -- Available Jones (and all his extended family), Joe Btfsplk (who literally wanders in during the course of the long saga of Salomey and Boar Scarloff), Moonbeam McSwine -- all without forgetting the likes of Hairless Joe and Lonesome Polecat, or Bessie Bopshire.

Second, the strip is eminently readable because Capp was a satirist in the classic vein of a Mark Twain. Comics are a medium, not a genre. Milton Caniff, probably the only other man who created casts of characters on the scale of Al Capp, wrote a classic bildungsroman (a fancy German term for a coming-of-age novel) in 'The Complete Terry and the Pirates, Vol. 1: 1934-1936' and then followed it up with a picaresque work (a slightly less fancy Spanish term for a likeable rogue who has a series of adventures) in 'Steve Canyon Volume 1: 1947-1948'.

Capp and Caniff were both great cartoonists but having said that this all they had in common. Like Mark Twain, and entirely unlike Caniff's more earnest heroes, there is a subversive edge to Capp.

This book covers work from the beginning of the 1940s. Yet Capp was able to carry off a hint at homosexuality. When Grubbins asks Mammy which couple in Dogpatch "love each other most madly", the percipient Pansy unhesitatingly points at Lonesome Polecat and Hairy Joe. (Unless I'm reading the December 20, 1942 Sunday all wrong?)

But nothing beats the way in which Capp overthrows gender stereotypes. Mammy is both smarter *and* stronger than her husband. And the only person to make a real success in the world outside Dogpatch is Bessie Bopshire. In Capp's world the men are idle and ignorant, or they are crooks. How subversive was that in the context of 1941 and 1942?

(Apart from Li'l Abner himself, the only decent male in Dogpatch seems to be Jedge Goodpants, who appears for all of *one* panel! Even Pappy Yokum is not above trying to cheat the good folks of Creepie Hollow when he gets the chance.)

Nothing and no-one was beyond the reach of Capp's satirical pen and brush. He skewers the empty hypocrisy of Hollywood stars sending out photographs autographed 'Sincerely yours' when neither word is true. He takes Romeo and Juliet to task. Only Margaret Mitchell, author of 'Gone With The Wind', proved a match for Capp. (And had he read his own strip, Capp should have known women are stronger and smarter!)

One of the classic sequences is that of the Flying Avenger, obviously intended as a spoof of the latest comics sensation, Superman, when Li'l Abner's powers are boosted by the Hindu mystic Swami Riva.

I can't prove it but there was a sequel to this tale; in 'Superman' 61, the Last Son of Krypton has his first encounter with kryptonite. The man who fells him is a supposed Hindu mystic, with a sliver of kryptonite in his turban. The name of the crook? Swami Riva.

Carrying on the comics theme, Bruce Canwell's excellent introduction compares Moonbeam to Marvel Comics's Incredible Hulk. Was the comparison inspired by the Sunday strips that ran from December 15, 1940 through January 19, 1941?

The production values are excellent. The dailies are nice and crisp, the Sundays are beautifully colored. And the last page assures fans that there will be a Volume Five to follow, with Fearless Fosdick eagle-eyed on its cover. Can't wait!

Another in the continuing series of old Abner strips and just as much fun as the previous books. I grew up reading about Abner and all the other denizens of Dogpatch and I heartily enjoy re-reading these.

I bought this book mainly for the nostalgia factor but it has caught my eye for entertainment also.
I had forgotten just how involved some of these strips could be. A series that runs on for days to
weeks and always with an entertaining subject. This is something for my kids and grandkids.
