Environmental Restoration and Design for Recreation and Ecotourism is the first book to provide a detailed examination of the entire process of restoring damaged or abandoned landscapes to benefit both nature and people, specifically for the purposes of recreation and ecotourism. With a focus on history, planning, methodology, design, and construction, it explores five case studies of successful regenerative landscape design projects and gives readers an inside look at the evolution of design projects.

Two of the cases offer a particularly comprehensive review of award-winning projects: the reparation of the degraded Las Vegas Wash into Clark County Wetlands Park and the transformation of the abandoned Barn Elms Reservoirs into the London Wetland Centre. Supported by extensive photographs, tables, maps, sketches, and schematics, these case studies trace how ideas are first conceived and then adopted, transformed, or even abandoned along the way. Each case study also includes a questions-and-answers discussion with designers and managers. Emphasizing the need for interdisciplinary cooperation, the book presents lessons learned from some of the most innovative projects in regenerative landscape design.

About the Author

Robert L. France is associate professor of watershed management at Nova Scotia Agricultural College (NSAC). Dr. France has conducted research in regions from the High Arctic to the tropics, on subject areas from bacteria and algae to whales, as well as on chemistry and environmental theory. He has taught at the universities of McGill, Ca’Foscari Venice, and Harvard. France is a Series Editor for CRC Press, where he runs the Integrative Studies in Water Management and Land Development series, and is also on the editorial board of the independent environmental press Green Frigate Books. He has published over two hundred articles and is the author or editor of over a dozen books of both a technical nature as well as general public interest. France conducts research on the environmental restoration of postagricultural and postindustrial landscapes, integrated watershed management and water-sensitive planning and design, the use of stable isotope analysis to trace material flow in aquatic foodwebs, the impacts of clear-cutting on land–lake linkages, landscape modifications at the suburban-agricultural interface, agricultural urbanism, environmental biography, and immersion into historic agricultural and utilitarian landscapes.

Taut, tense and terrific.

I was coerced into buying this book because of an interest in flying and action/adventure novels. But once I started reading it I didn't remember why I needed coersion. It simply a terrific read from begginning to end. I thought that it would be similar to books like Arthur Hailey's 'Airport' which I had read years ago and quite enjoyed but I wondered how DeMille was going to do anything new with the genre. Although a big fan of the 'X-Files' and the like I was just about "conspiracied" out. But DeMille makes the missile tragedy and cover-up very believable. The attention to detail (as he acknowledged, Thomas Block's aeronautical knowledge was vital)is excellent but he never lets the technicalities (either the problems experienced at the altitude or the militaria) bog the story down. You find yourself in the cockpit right next to John Berry with your heart pounding.
Interestingly the romantic sub plot was barely touched on and was refreshing in this age of sex/sexual tension influencing everything. Rightly, the protaganists put this to one side to concentrate on the more important issues at hand. This leads to the sexual tension being there, just in the periphery. 'Mayday' is brilliantly written and while originally published in the late 1970s, the version that I bought was updated for the 1990s (in much the same way the Stephen King updated 'The Stand') and I can honestly say it's an excellent book. I bought 'Mayday' about 3 months ago and quickly got my hands on and read 'Spencerville' and 'The General's Daughter' by DeMille (both of which are excellent) and we also now have 'Gold Coast', 'Plum Island' 'Word of Honour', 'The Talbot Odyssey' and 'By the Rivers of Babylon' in our bookcase.
For fans of the action side of the story, I can also recommend Clive Cussler, whose earlier books resemble 'Mayday', including coincidentally one called 'Mayday', although I think its American title was 'The Mediterranean Caper'.

Early, underwritten work by great action author

Nelson DeMille is one of my three or four favorite authors. He passed Tom Clancy and John Grisham some time ago.
DeMille writes with an almost frantic pace, using regular guy heroes who emerge from the ruins of tragedy or terror. "Mayday", about a jet airliner accidentally damaged by a missle over the Pacific, offered DeMille an early chance to develop his style. Placing almost al of the action in the fuselage of the damaged plane limits his stage. The details of decompression at high altitude are not pretty. The male and female leads are heroic. The victimized pilot of the fighter that fired the deadly shot is a good, if side story.
The conclusions are somewhat predictable. I finished with small disappointment, having read much of his later work earlier.

From the first page to the last, the action carrys you in the cockpit with all the fear and excitement possible. As with all his books he does not leave much time for anything else until you are done and then want another. I have read all his books and only wait for his next to make my day.

Ground breaking in its time, now a period piece.

Some people swear by this book and the author gets a lot of credit for putting Reiki in the hands of more people as its founder, Mikao Usui, intended. Ms. Stein had to come by her training piecemeal and has clearly done more with hers than others with more thorough Western "Traditional" training. To me it seems unfortunate though that she mixes Reiki up with her own home brew of goddess worship. In my opinion that's misleading, however unintentional. Not only is Wicca and its derivatives NO part of any Japanese Buddhist path to enlightenment, but one of Mikao Usui's greatest achievements may have been to keep Reiki from dumbing down and turning into just another religious practice. In Reiki one experiences truth, not submits to indoctrination. Everyone who add bells and whistles and rust undercoatings to Reiki just does not get how or more importantly why Japanese culture places such a premium on elegant simplicity. Power is hidden in Reiki's original simplicity. Less is more. More is mere excess baggage. Most of what you pay for in many Reiki classes in the West today would be unfamiliar to it's founder. Only in such an atmosphere could this book sell very well and it does little to clear it. I believe she errs out of innocence here. I found her manual for teachers far more useful.

Beautiful, well explained and illustrated introduction and reference.

I was attuned to all three levels of Usui Reiki (Master level in Usui), and given some materials then, but the Master (Mistress?) who attuned me also encouraged learning from every source possible. I bought this and I'm glad I did. Stein researches and gives history and her unique viewpoint and experiences. She is also all about practical instruction and suggestions, showing and telling about the Reiki symbols, et cetera. I find myself referring back here often. When a Reiki 1 I attuned asked for guidance on giving her first treatment session, I ended up discussing the positions and procedure based largely on Stein's illustrations and description (the Reiki 1 has a copy of this book as well).
Some Reiki folks who follow a more traditional (American-traditional that is) approach dislike sharing the information this way. They think it should be limited and controlled. I agree with Stein's assessment that the need for healing in the world is greater than ever before and we need all the healers in action we can get. The book itself states it is not a substitute for attunement, so any criticism on that basis is misplaced. It is a beautifully done introduction and reference work that every Reiki (and those interested in becoming one) would do well to read and keep handy.

'Essential Reiki' is truly essential if you want to learn about Reiki. While everything must be taken with a grain of salt to go with your own practice, the philosophy is open and varied. Everything is clearly explained, from the history, philosophies, and actual practices. Though controversial, the symbols are shown so a complete education can be had. While the practice of Reiki was exclusive for many decades, it is clear in our place and time that the earth needs more loving energy and support, and by spreading the complete knowledge of Reiki, more people can learn to practice it and help to heal our earth.

The biggest strength of this book is its simplicity. The author has been able to reiterate the basics of value investing which a retail investor must follow. Basic investing principles like the fact that risk and return go together and one should invest based on analysis rather than tips, have been stressed upon. The author has suggested some ratios for filtering companies for investment based on his own experience. Retail investors would find this useful as a ‘primer’ for investing. The book is a good attempt to spread financial literacy amongst the masses by simplifying the principles of value investing in a language that can be understood by a layman.

He is a graduate in mechanical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi and did his MBA (Finance) from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai. He has 25 years of experience in the Indian corporate sector. He has varied industrial experience across verticals such as automobiles, pharmaceuticals, and so on, along with a brief stint in academics. Dr Prasad did his PhD in Supply Chain Management from Osmania University, Hyderabad and completed Certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM) certification from Advancing Productivity, Innovation, and Competitive Success (APICS), USA in 2003. He was made fellow member of APICS with the title Certified Fellow in Production and Inventory Management (CFPIM) in January 2009.

He has written several articles on varied topics on Management in The Hindu Business Line, Hindustan Times, Pharma Bio World, Express Pharma, Indian Management, The Chartered Accountant Student, Materials Management Review, and so on. He has authored a book titled Corporate Performance Improvement: A Practitioner’s Perspective, which describes a unique approach at improving return on assets of any company.
