Friedman and Schwartz marshaled massive historical data and sharp analytics to support the claim that monetary policy--steady control of the money supply--matters profoundly in the management of the nation's economy, especially in navigating serious economic fluctuations. In their influential chapter 7, The Great Contraction--which Princeton published in 1965 as a separate paperback--they address the central economic event of the century, the Depression. According to Hugh Rockoff, writing in January 1965: "If Great Depressions could be prevented through timely actions by the monetary authority (or by a monetary rule), as Friedman and Schwartz had contended, then the case for market economies was measurably stronger."

Revolutionary, albeit flawed, Monetary Analysis

"A Monetary History of the United States, 1867-1960" by Milton Friedman and Anna Schwartz is an epic in economic literature. The authors concisely analyze nearly 100 years of monetary history and prove why monetary economics matter. Their work, originally published in 1963, offers immaculate insight into endogenous and exogenous economic variables that shaped US history.

When reviewing a classic text it is important to test it on two criteria: 1) it's ingenuity; and, 2) it's validity. In regards to ingenuity "Monetary History" paved the way towards a statistically grounded analysis of macroeconomics (in this case monetary theory). While "Monetary History" was groundbreaking it's truly memorable aspect is Ch7's "The Great Contraction". This chapter, which is now known as the money hypothesis, revolutionized the way economists thought about the Great

Why the work remains a classic, even though flawed, is because the sheer difficulty in producing such a feat. Friedman and Schwartz managed to put together a comprehensive 100 year monetary history in (a short) 700 pages. The amount of research required to take on such a project is hard to grasp. The footnotes in the "Monetary History" give a small glimpse into how much work was required to create this book. They alone are the size of a mid-sized economic text. Throughout the text the authors synthesis a wide range of evidence, often being forced to recalculate the statistics given to them, and somehow come out with a fairly consistent history.

The work is so encompassing it is impossible in an Amazon book review to point out all of the prescient ideas presented in a "Monetary History". Here is a short list off the top of my head: 1) money matters in the short-run; 2) active gov't policy can prevent bank panics if correctly implemented; 3) Consistent misperception regarding economics have OFTEN created bad policy (both in the private and public sphere); 4) the gold standard was never good (and we never had anything near an ACTUAL gold standard); 5) An excellent review of business cycle contractions between 1844-1960; 6)Everything you wanted to know about the composition of banking mechanisms from 1867-1960. There are many, many more...

Friedman's "Monetary History" analysis does occasionally feel awkward (this tends to happen when his quantitative analysis does not account for history and he is forced to make qualitative assumptions). 1) The entire Great Contraction rested on the qualitative factor of not having a 'Great Man' running the Federal Reserve; 2) Deflation existed side by side with rapid economic expansion in the 1880's, which Friedman finds interesting, but no attempt is made to ascertain whether monetary issues had any recessionary effects on potential growth; 3) The entire 48-60' analysis exerts a strong ideological stance that did not seem to exist in the earlier chapters. (many more minor hiccups exist and for the most part Friedman is willing to admit when he cannot reasonably prove causation).

However, two major problems exist in the "Monetary History".

1) The assumption that money does not matter in the long-run is unsupported through their analysis. Friedman and Schwartz fail to find any long lasting effects regarding changes in the price level and money stock to changes in economic activity. This view, which is a very simple look at correlations, is essentially embracing a negation. They fail to find a connection between monetary economics and business cycles so it must not exist. Though this view has little empirical evidence it is made several times throughout the work (and in almost every case the statement seems to be completely out of place). The claim that money is 'neutral' has forever changed economics by being included in the Neoclassical Synthesis.

2) Friedman's chapter on the velocity of money is by far the weakest part of his text. After going on for ~700 pages with precise attention to quantitative analysis Friedman is forced to argue, in a mere 3 pages, that changes in velocity must be due to rational expectations (with little empirical evidence). Friedman's assumption that Velocity exhibits a secular decline with rising income is CRUCIAL when analyzing Monetarism. The Quantity Theory of Money states: Money*Velocity=Price*Output --- M*V=P*Y (this is a rearrangement of Fisher's equation -- See Michael Emmett Bradely's review for a far superior theoretical analysis of this equation). If Velocity can be considered constant then changes in M = changes in P*Y. This means all that is needed to have stable business cycles is an unchanging, or better yet a slightly increasing, money supply. HOWEVER, this flawed assumption is why Monetarism is so difficult to implement into policy. Friedman's tentative assumption in his "Monetary History" became the dogma of Monetarism.

After successfully preventing the Arat Kur and Hkh’Rkh alliance from conquering his home world Earth and stopping his angry retribution-seeking Consolidated Terran Republic Terrans from committing genocide against their enemies, Caine Riordan anticipates a respite. Observing what happened in the recent war, another Arat Kur ally the Ktor believes the Terrans are very weak when they failed to eradicate their defeated opponents.

Instead of R&R, a diplomacy opportunity arises when the much more advanced Slaasriithi, impressed by the Terran’s display of controlling the urge of retaliatory mass executions, request Caine to come to their planet to discuss a pact. As Caine and his entourage journey to the meeting, Ktor operatives plan to destroy the Terrans’ first diplomat and his retinue to prevent their adversary from obtaining a powerful though peaceful ally; unaware how deadly first contact with the Slaasriithi can be.

The third Caine Riordan Tales of the Terran Republic military science fiction (see Fire With Fire) is a superb first contact entry, but this time with a friendly yet deadly species rather than a belligerent adversary; though there is plenty of the latter too. Less of a political statement than Trial By Fire, the keys to this enjoyable outer space adventure are the various species that make up the Gannon universe seem real and the protagonist’s wise ability to recognize that each race requires different means of customized diplomacy as one size fits one sentient people only.

Answers and Questions

The third book in the Caine Riordan series, Raising Caine takes the reader to alien landscapes, where things aren't what they seem.

This book picks up immediately after what happens in Trial by Fire, with Caine Riordan doing what he does best, dealing with aliens, and secrets.

The only problem with these books, is while they answer questions you have from previous books, they also create more questions than were answered. You are left wanting more, which is a good thing.

I eagerly await the next chapter in the adventures of Caine Riordan.

Good continuation of the story line

Excellent continuation of the story that takes us to new worlds and introduces us to the Slashriiti (I’m probably not spelling this correctly). The story is captivating almost all the way through but is occasionally interrupted by passages that drag a bit, or get too complicated to understand without putting the book down and hitting various references. I’m not sure if following both Caine and his adversaries at the same time was the best approach and it removes most of the mystery from the book and introduces too much unnecessary hypothesizing. I think that leaving that part out, and having Caine deal with mysterious adversaries, would have been better for both this book and the next.
The book is clearly intended to be read as part of the series and would not stand on its own. In addition, the ending is just a chapter closing with a major open question remaining unanswered. Still, if you are a fan of the first two books, you will enjoy this one just like the previous installments of the series. I, for one, am looking forward to more.

Warning: An ERRATA sheet that'll make your head spin!

Super disappointing after the success and ease of use of all of Gesine's other books. Her publishers really fell down on the job. Or her test kitchen people or SOMEBODY! A cookbook coming from the caliber of chef that she is should not have an ERRATA a page long plus a link to a PDF they can keep adjusting as more issues become clear. Wait for a second printing because they have a long way to go with this one before everything is right. In fact, I daresay purchasers of the first printing ARE the test kitchen people!

I pre-ordered this book, so when I received it there was no errata sheet included. It was hot off the press.

I am an intermediate to advanced baker. The techniques used are fantastic, and the flavor combinations are mouth -watering. However, the recipe for the Celebration Cake fell flat, especially with the Raspberry buttercream. My buttercream looked nothing like the vibrant pink shown in the photograph; it was more like a grayish pink. The recipe called for one pound of butter, though it does say it might not all be needed. After 3 sticks of butter, the mixture looked to be curdling, at which point we are instructed to stop. That a measurement was off by a stick of butter was a little surprising. The real failure on this was the lack of color and the *overwhelming* taste of butter....which was not appetizing. And I love me some butter.

Thinking the error was mine, I lent the book to my sister, who bakes cakes professionally. She had the exact same result as I did with the buttercream.

She said she tried a few other recipes before returning it to me, with the feedback that she thought the book was inspirational, but she would never buy it to bake from it.

This book needed more recipe testing before it was released.

Bake it like YOU mean it, and please don't follow the instructions!

This is my first review on Amazon.com. But I was so disappointed with the results, that I had to dhare my expiriences with the recipes. BILYMI is sure a perfect Coffee table book, with beautiful photos, mouthwatering recipes, extraordinary flavour combos, helpful notes and photo tutorials and amazing Cakes. It's a very inspiring Book, If you want to impress. But If the recipes don't work, a Book doesn't worth the money for me! I have so many Books on my shelf, some are good, others amazing, some ok, but this one...I don't know. I tested a few recipes so far, and after spending hours on them, I didn't have only one good result. I would say that I'm an advanced baker, so after the disappointing results, I started checking the recipes. I have never seen a Book with so many errata like this before! The metric conversions in this Book are a disaster: Sugar, Flour, Cake Flour, no difference in weight with sifted or unsifted Flour...If you weigh your ingredients please don't follow the suggested amounts in this Book! Also there is a very confusing note in this Book regarding the Conversion charts: the author says that 1cup of superfine Sugar=8oz. 1cup granulated Sugar=7oz. This is important, as the amount of Sugar affects the taste and structure of a Cake. But in her recipe the metric equivalent is 7oz. I don't unterstand why the author mentions this, but doesn' t apply it in her recipes. And although the sugar "generally used in this Book...is superfine Sugar...", it appears in only 1recipe. Ok, maybe this is a standard conversion chart, but if a book offers metric conversions, they have to be accurate in order to get good results. Well, typos happen, and what differs a good recipe from a Bad One, consists of a lot more then only an accurate amount of ingredients: it should have an equilibrated combo of straightforward and easy to follow techniques, and of the right ingredients and equipment. BILYMI doesn't have all this. It has typos in ingredients, techniques and amounts. Here are some examples I found after reading, or testing recipes:

1)Green Mountain Tiramisu': the instructions says that for the Ladyfingers batter you have to sift the Flour over the creamed egg yolks, and then to fold in the egg whites. I followed the instructions and ended up with a curdled mess. So I checked other recipes, changed my procedure and had a creamy batter. But the result of the finished Cake layer was awful: dry and hard. And this wasn't a matter of taste. So I rechecked other recipes, skipped the suggested Bread Flour and Cornstarch in BILYMI and took all purpose Flour instead. But 2oz less. The layer was airy but very thin, only 1/2 inch. I would suggest to bake the batter in a jelly roll Pan, instead of the recommended half sheet Pan. Because in my opinion there isn't enough batter for a half sheet Pan.
2) Strawberry-Meyer Lemon Chiffon Cake: The Cake was wonderful, but the Buttercream was more like Butter than a smooth Cream. The author doesn't tell that you probably don't need the whole 1pound Butter. Learning by doing: approx. hhalf the amount is enough.
3) Chestnut Slices: good results, but only because I doublechecked the recipe. the metric conversion of Cake Flour is wrong. 1cup=140g. 120g would be the right conversion. Compared to this the metric conversion for all purpose Flour=120g. That means that 1cup cake Flour weighs more than 1cup all purpose Flour. Typo!
4) Malakofftorte a La Raymo: this recipe is a disaster! Ingredients: 1-1/3 cup Bread Flour=185g. 35g!!! is the right conversion. This is a difference of 5oz. You can imagine the results...I Don't know how it's possible, but with only two eggs in the batter, you can pipe-attention please- 15 three inches long Ladyfingers+(OMG) 3 eight inch Cake rounds. And now the instructions"...trace 6 eight inch rounds on parchement papers...and pipe 4 Cake rounds with the batter? Why trace 6? Two are just for fun! And the surprise comes at the end: you need only 3 Cake rounds to assamble the Cake???? Typo!
5) Pyramide Cake: the instruction says to "put the Almond paste to the batter...", but uuuppsss...where is it? It's not listed in the ingredients. Skip it. Typo!
6)Aztec Chocolate creme fraiche Pound Cake: such a nice glaze listed in the ingredients, but you at the end you only need to dust the Cake with Cacao. Skip the glaze!
7) Even the Cake on the front cover has a Typo: the Ganache listed in the ingredients, is only mentioned at the end of the instruction: "....fill a Pastry bag with the remaining Ganache and pipe hearts. ..: After googling the recipe, I found out that you have to spread the Ganache (and not the Buttercream as the recipe suggest!) on the Cake layers, so it can act as glue for the Chocolate roulade.Typo!
I don't know If the other recipes work, and honestly I'm totaly annoyed of testing it. The title of the Book for me sounds so sarcastic now: Bake it like you mean it. That means: Do whatever you want, but Don't trust my instructions, because they aren't accurate. If you want good results, Don't buy this Book. If you want some inspiration, look at the pictures and Skip the recipes. I wouldn't buy this Book again!
