About the Author

James M. Rubenstein received his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University in 1975. He is Professor of Geography at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, where he teaches urban and human geography, and where he helped develop the new Sustainability co-major in the Institute for the Environment & Sustainability.

In addition to The Cultural Landscape , he is also the author of Pearson’s Contemporary Human Geography , Second Edition and Introduction to Contemporary Geography . He is often invited to give talks and presentations at colleges, high schools, and professional meetings.� Rubenstein works as a regional consultant for the Chicago Federal Reserve Bank and he conducts research in the automotive industry. He is often interviewed by the media on automotive and economic issues, and has published three books on the subject: The Changing U.S. Auto Industry: A Geographical Analysis (Routledge); Making and Selling Cars: Innovation and Change in the U.S. Auto Industry (The Johns Hopkins University Press); and Who Really Made Your Car? Restructuring and Geographic Change in the Auto Industry (W.E. Upjohn Institute, with Thomas Klier).

Great for AP Human Geography

Currently I am taking an AP Human Geography class in my high school and this is the book we were assigned to buy. This book has wonderful charts and pictures along with descriptions. This book goes into depth and doesn't only touch the surface. I recomend this book to AP Human Geography teachers and students!

what a wonderful contrast it would be to go into more depth ...

This book is a textbook for AP Human Geography, and as a teacher I have to say that it should be more balanced in its presentation. For example, on the chapter on Population, it compares the population policy of China (the one child policy) to that of India. It refers to China's one child policy as "successful" without mentioning that there are six million MISSING girls in China as a result of this brutal policy. It refers to India's population policy as less successful, when in fact India has a much higher respect for Faith and family. That is very concerning.

My students talked about these slanted views throughout the year, so this bias is noticed. We tried to add to the curriculum with inspriational stories which add so much when studying developing nations. For example, when studying about the World Bank and the IMF, what a wonderful contrast it would be to go into more depth on Grameen Bank, which was founded by a professor from Tennessee who realized that he could free an entire village from economic slavery - with less than a $30 investment. Thus began the success story in empowering villages -and Muhammad Yunus thus created a bank owned by the women of small villages empowering other women. Compare that to the failure rates of the IMF and the World Bank! We need textbooks that inspire with what individuals can do in this world, and to create these textbooks would modify the feeling that too many people have that the problems of the world are so great that only big government can solve them. Better textbooks would be a good place to start.

solid textbook

This text is an easy read for both the eyes and brain due to the font choice and layout. Illustrations and photographs are visually pleasing as well. I am a pseudogeography junkie with a passion for the human experience, development, and social justice issues around the globe. This text worked well in these areas of my learning experience. A social work major is responsible for the content of this review! Well Done, however, a bit on the expensive side.

Landmark text on the topic

I am a researcher in the field of visual optics. I first obtained a copy of this book nearly 5 years ago, when I was a lecturer at the University of Auckland. I thought the book was excellent then and the subsequent passage of time has reinforced my view.
I refer to my copy constantly. When I am dealing with a new and complicated topic as part of my work my first instinct is to check if Smith and Atchison have anything to say on the topic, and I'm usually rewarded. They nearly always provide good introductory material and analytical tools. The book contains very basic level material which is suitable for undergraduates in the area of clinical optics and develops these concepts to postgrad and research levels.
The section on aberrations is extremely useful, although it does not use the Zernike polynomials that have become popular in the last few years, it has still allowed me to do useful analysis of my data. I have also found the sections on optical quality calculations extremely useful, and the appendices on schematic eyes are the most complete I've come across in the literature.
I look forward to many subsequent editions of this text. An excellent book for researchers and students.

Good for Ophthalmic Optics

This book has good content, particularly for ophthalmic optics. The description of optical aberrations is useful. However, the treatment of paraxial optics is confusing. The authors should avoid the use of symbols that are not writeable (e.g. Cyrillic), and obscure Greek letters. All in all, a useful book.

Mr. Antaki is Chairman of ASME III (Nuclear) Working Group Piping Design, member of ASME-QME (Qualification of Mechanical Equipment, Nuclear), and member of ASME III (nuclear) Subgroup Component Design, and ASME (nuclear) Operation and Maintenance Committee. He has over 37 years of experience in nuclear plant engineering, and is an instructor of nuclear engineering courses for the ASME. Mr. Antaki was Manager of Systems structural Analysis at Westinghouse (one of the leading reactor designers), and is currently Chief Engineer Becht Nuclear Services.

Mr. Gilada has 33 years of experience in Mechanical and Civil Construction and Design Projects. He developed expertise as Principal Consultant Engineer in Comanche Peak Nuclear Power Plant in Structural Dynamics and Piping Engineering and performed acting managerial duties as needed. Personal, Beautiful, Timeless

Lisa Carver's astonishingly personal and original REACHING OUT WITH NO HANDS: RECONSIDERING YOKO ONO is one of those rare jewels that somehow snuck through the cracks of a cynical publishing world -- It is not a biography or a monograph, more like an extended thought piece or series of reflections on a woman whose career and art are unfortunately much maligned as is she (for somehow, apocryphally, being the catalyst for the Beatles demise), and were in much need of a fresh look. Every page of this small but vibrant volume is a joy, whether Carver is ruminating on Yoko's art or music or her role as mother or widow, she never fails to find a piece of her own heart to bring to the story. Where others might have failed with this approach, taking the subject too personally, Carver achieves a sort of freedom and turns what could have been an academic exercise into an emotionally charged but exquisitely intellectual adventure. An unexpected, transcendent pleasure. Highly recommended.

Yoko in Lisaland: An abstract trip down the rabbit hole...

Anything Lisa writes is worth reading. Her new book on Yoko is highly personal yet very insightful. Most people in the western world who know Yoko only via her music and as "John Lennon's wife who broke up the Beatles", and MAYBE her book Grapefruit, know only a small part of her and her life. Especially her life as a major player in the Fluxus movement and art world. Her work already had it's fans (and detractors) well before a certain Mr. Lennon came into her life. Personally speaking - with the exceptions of her first album, Life With The Lions and Fly - I wish the Lennon connection had never happened. Yes it made her world famous, but it also made her reviled by most and turned her focus from an artist with a wonderful sense of humor, a great sense of concept and a truly unique sense of abstraction into the disliked wife of one of the most famous musicians in the world. People forget that Yoko already had a life well before Lennon.

Lisa's book is like being directly injected into the brain of the author while she meditates at length on Yoko herself and Yoko's place in the world and as an artist and as a woman in the greater scheme of things filtered through the mind of a woman who's cultural references are probably much greater than yours and who's ability to view things and people without judgement, with genuine interest, passion and an utterly charming innate ability to fascinate makes her thee PERFECT person to write a book about Yoko Ono.

Even if you hate Yoko you should still buy this book. It might even make YOU reconsider...

Outsider Artist

The time just might be right for a reappraisal of Yoko Ono. As a subject, Yoko comes with many problems: she's so different and emotionally remote. Yoko's has always been defiantly an outsider in her creative outlook. How does one wrap one's mind around Yoko Ono? Lisa Carver gives a full accounting of Yoko's wild and woolly art projects. Can't say I understand any of them because they're all way out there.

Lisa Carver does an admirable job of presenting her subject, but sometimes she goes off track. In fact, Hitler gets extended attention, but is there any connection? Some of this has a stream of consciousness feel, and the prose doesn't contain a standard structure. This book is less an overview of Yoko Ono and can be better described as Lisa Carver's mediations on Yoko Ono. Admirably, Ms. Carver goes to bat for Yoko, valiantly defending her against the reasons why Yoko is so reviled by so many. And in these efforts, some seriously valid points are made, although they're not altogether convincing. This doesn't go against Lisa Carver's authorial ability, because Yoko Ono's personality and artistic endeavors remain enigmatic and resist explanation. After all, there's no one else even remotely like Yoko, is there?

Toward the very end of the book, we get into the nitty gritty - the appalling stories of Yoko's treatment of John Lennon's first son, Julian and, of course, her intrusions into the Beatles' musical circle. (Didn't even know that John Lennon's blood stained shirt and shattered spectacles were offered up for sale as artistic statements.) Everyone knows how Paul McCartney has long held extremely strong feelings against Yoko. After all, she had the nerve to assert herself during the Beatles' last studio sessions at Abbey Road, and how dare she? Who invited her or asked for her output? Upon closer analysis, throwing Yoko into the mix was probably masterminded by John Lennon himself. What a surefire way to bring the band to its knees! Certainly, John Lennon had his own antagonistic leanings and what a perfect partner Yoko proved in this regard. She was John's happy henchman and played that role to the very hilt.

Update: At the ripe old age of 79, Yoko's still staging protests. On Friday, January 11, 2013, Yoko Ono and son Sean were in Albany, New York protesting hydraulic fracturing. I love that.

Missing Chapter 4 of US version

This textbook is a great value and very useful. My only concern is that it does not include Chapter 4 of the US version, even though the seller write the description as "Same Content as US Edition in Different Softcover Design" Others have commented this in the reviews, but unfortunately I did not read that particular review before purchasing.

The text has a note at the top left of the cover that states"Circulation of this edition outside the Indian subcontinent is UNAUTHORIZED" as well as a disclaimer on the back cover that states "This international edition preserves the cutting-edge approach and pedagogy of the original, but may also feature alterations, customization and adaptation from the United States version."

Chapter 4 of the US version is on Linear Programming Sensitivity Analysis. While this is of course useful, since Excel's Solver has an output report for sensitivity, you don't REALLY need as much detail as the chapter provides because you don't need to do this manually. Missing ebooks Chapter 4

This book matches the electronic book exactly, EXCEPT for the fact that it's missing the electronic books chapter 4: Linear Programming Sensitivity Analysis. This topic does not exist in this printed text, it skips it to Transportation, Assignment, and Network Models (printed books chapter 4 and electronic books chapter 5). So just know, you can use this book until you get to chapter 4.

Excellent reference even after the class is over.

This is one of the best textbooks that I have had. Not only is it useful for the class, but it is useful in the real world. So much that a few classes later, I found that this was of better use than the textbooks that were for the class that I was in. A comprehensive guide to explain the decision models and examples to help you make your own to fit your necessary application.
