His grassroots approach reveals the global origins of soul food, the forces that shaped its development, and the distinctive cultural collaborations that occurred among Africans, Asians, Europeans, and Americans throughout history. Opie shows how food can be an indicator of social position, a site of community building and cultural identity, and a juncture at which different cultural traditions can develop and impact the collective health of a community.

Although the cooking of African Americans did not earn the sobriquet “soul food” until the advent of the Black Power movement of the 1960s, its origins stretch back to the very earliest days of colonial America. To survive, slaves transported from their native lands had to learn to cook with the leftover, less-desirable meats and vegetables that their overlords shunned. They combined these with memories of the foodstuffs of tropical West Africa. From these beginnings came a host of dishes that have become integral components of the larger American tradition. Historian Opie goes back to the sources and traces soul food’s development over the centuries. He shows how Southern slavery, segregation, and the Great Migration to the North’s urban areas all left their distinctive marks on today’s African American cuisine. He concludes that soul food has recently commenced a decline as Caribbean cooking has grown to dominate much of African American culinary practice. --Mark Knoblauch

Frederick Douglass Opie teaches history at Babson College. Barry Berman (Ph.D. in Business with majors in Marketing and Behavioral Science) is the Walter H. “Bud” Miller Distinguished Professor of Business and Professor of Marketing and International Business at Hofstra University. He is also the director of Hofstra’s Executive MBA program. Joel R. Evans (Ph.D. in Business with majors in Marketing and Public Policy) is the RMI Distinguished Professor of Business and Professor of Marketing and International Business at Hofstra University. He is also the coordinator for Hofstra’s Master of Science programs in Marketing and Marketing Research.

While at Hofstra, each has been honored as a faculty inductee in Beta Gamma Sigma honor society, received multiple Dean’s Awards for service, and been selected as the Teacher of the Year by the Hofstra M.B.A. Association. For several years, Drs. Berman and Evans were co-directors of Hofstra’s Retail Management Institute and Business Research Institute. Both regularly teach undergraduate and graduate courses to a wide range of students.

Barry Berman and Joel R. Evans have worked together for nearly 30 years in co-authoring several best-selling texts, including Retail Management: A Strategic Approach, Tenth Edition. They have also consulted for a variety of clients, from “mom-and-pop” retailers to Fortune 500 companies. They are co-founders of the American Marketing Association’s Special Interest Group in Retailing and Retail Management. They have co-chaired the Academy of Marketing Science/American Collegiate Retailing Association’s triennial conference. As a college student who does not write well or does not have a clue about how to write well, this is a great book. It provides you with various different topics and most importantly, it keeps you interested. I did not have any issues studying for my Composition class, thanks to this book, which is more than I can say for most of my other classes.

VERY Helpful

Another required textbook for Honors English Comp. I had been a paralegal for 28 years and thought I was pretty good at writing effective arguments; this book showed me even more powerful ways. And, since during my class I had to write a literary review, which I'd never heard of, this was a great resource. I usually sell back my books; this one I will keep for the remaining time in college (yes, in college even though a baby boomer!). Very useful tool!

Good book, not very helpful for the exam

This book contained a lot of information. On its own, the book was great, but not very helpful if you are using it for the LARE. It was listed on CLARB's website as a source for study material. I was able to find the information in the book elsewhere (Time savers & Graphic standards), so it was not helpful in that way.

I am confused as to why CLARB felt that another book ($$$) recommendation was needed.

Still, nothing against this book. It is good, but not for the LARE.

Great book. This should be one of the first books new Landscape Architecture (or engineering or architecture) students should read. In my opinion, you need to know almost everything about your site and the surrounding areas in order to execute the intended program.

A well-organized and thoughtful guide to process-oriented site planning and design.

I bought this a while back and just never got around to reading it. Then the new edition came out. :( I'm studying for the LARE and this book is on the recommended reading list. I'm not sure how helpful it will be for that - other reviewers have said it's not really helpful for the exam. BUT if you are unclear on site inventory, analysis, conceptual design, and the general progression of the design process, this is an excellent book. It describes, in detail, a process-oriented approach. It discusses the activities separately so you can critically think about each one and then, in subsequent chapters, walks you through how to integrate, synthesize, and apply your analysis in conceptual design and design development. There are lots of great graphics to inspire those of us that prefer to visually communicate in less 'avant garde' styles, but don't expect any lessons on graphic representation. For that, I suggest "Drawing Plan Graphics on the Computer", which is a digital download in 3 parts available here on Amazon. I highly recommend this book. I'm not sure what has changed in the new edition, but if you see this one on sale, pick it up.
