A Quick Guide not a DIY how to book

This book is simplistic but should be seen for what it is, a "Quick Guide" only. I can keep you from making a dumb mistake if you have not put in enough planning before beginning. As such it was worth the purchase price as a used book.

I purchased this book for my husband who plans to build a garage. he was absolutely delighted with the detailed and easy to follow instructions. My husband is not a builder and has no experience in building garages. So this instruction book has proven most helpful. Highly recommended!

About the Author
Dr. Alfred J. Plechner, a University of California Davis School of Veterinary Medicine graduate, has practiced in Los Angeles for nearly four decades. He has been an owner practitioner for 40 years at the California Animal Hospital, which has been ranked among the top percentile of animal clinics in the country. He has always been interested in nutrition, allergy and the relationship between hormone-immune imbalances and diseases in dogs, cats and horses. His research has been published in veterinary journals, human medical journals and popular animal magazines. He has written several books, including his most recent release, “Pets at Risk: From Allergies to Cancer, Remedies for an Unsuspected Epidemic,” and his first book, “Pet Allergies.”

Saved MY life.

4 years ago, I was on a teleseminar for pets with Dr. Plechner while he was explaining this endocrine/immune imbalance in animals. All of a sudden, I realized that this was what was wrong with ME. I bought both this book and his "Pets at Risk" books immediately and embarked on a journey to heal myself. With Dr. Plechner's help and testing, I found a local alternative MD to help heal me from 20 years of violent headaches and crushing fatigue and weakness. By the time I read this book, I was bedridden and very sick, worried I would not live. I was eventually diagnosed with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue and Addison's Disease. 4 years later, I am pain free, no headaches and working once again. I warn you that this information will not be well received by 99% of the MD's out there. You will have to work to find a doctor to help you with this. Many self-medicate, working with discussion groups online for advice and purchasing needed meds from overseas, but that is not a recommended way to go. But if you desire to really get well, you can find someone to help you. Read this book and see for yourself. I think a light bulb will go on in your head! Also recommend, "Safe Uses of Cortisol" to back it up.

The Most Valuable Clinical Protocol for Endocrine Immune Balance

Dr. Plechner is the vet of the century. This book is very valuable for learning how to balance animal's immune systems by balancing their hormones. Dr. Plechner has developed a protocol which works down at the foundation of the biochemistry to stabilize an animal's health, and thus is very valuable both as preventative medicine, but also helps cure many diseases. Dr. Plechner's book Pets at Risk, should be read first, then this book should be read for more specific information. I have used Dr. Plechner"s protocols for over a decade, after finding the first book he wrote many years ago. With Dr. Plechner's help, I was able to put three of my cats into remission from FELV (feline leukemia). Dr. Plechner helped us execute his protocol. My vet was extremely skeptical at first, but ended up being so impressed with the results which we obtained working with the Plechner protocol, that he flew to Los Angeles with me to meet Dr. Plechner. For anyone who cares health issues in animals or humans, this book and Pets at Risk, are both "must reads". Dr. Plechner is a genius clinician.

Misleading title, lots of mistakes, but the blocks do all finish out the same size

The reason that I gave this book four stars instead of a much lower rating is that so far, all my blocks have turned out exactly the same size, and I do mean exactly. They are not precisely square, but that just means that I must orient them all the same direction when joining them for my finished piece (which is large, and I will probably complete most of the blocks worth doing in the process). This is true even though I have not used the same yarn, but very similar yarn, for the different blocks. The other thing I like is that there are a nice variety of blocks, including many very lovely ones, whether you like flowers, texture, lace-like patterns (sturdy enough for an afghan, not the fragile, complicated lace designs), bobbles, or granny squares.

Now for the bad: Interweave Press is very good about posting corrections to patterns on their website and keeping them there long enough so that you can still access them if the book is old, but they only do it when someone points out an error, and that means that someone who is experienced has to do every block. Stitch diagrams or stitch counts would have helped a great deal with this.

Also, as someone else pointed out, for many of the blocks they give four color schemes and count those as four different patterns. That is really stretching it, since apparently I have invented a host of new blocks, as I used my own color scheme. Just as bad is the number of blocks that are just single crochet all the way, but they have a row or two in a different color. Change the number of rows that are a different color, or change their position within the block (near the bottom instead of near the top), and they count each of those as new patterns. (They do the same thing with bobbles.) A better book would be one with just 50 patterns, each with diagrams and stitch counts, and checked for accuracy, and if all blocks were designed to be the same size, it would be a classic for all time. (And they should show as many of those blocks as possible on the front cover, as their cover choice has little eye appeal.)

I'm also very happy with this book, for all the reasons previous reviewers have elaborated on. Others have noted that the book does indeed contain errors in the patterns, so I'd like to add that corrections are available from the publisher.

About the Author
Michael G. LaFosse has been an origami artist and teacher for decades, and co-curated the Origami Now! exhibition at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts. The recent award-winning film Between the Folds by Vanessa Gould features LaFosse and his work prominently.

Richard L. Alexander holds a degree from Cornell University in biology; he also studied landscape architecture and design. Together, Alexander and LaFosse have created dozens of origami exhibitions, and over 70 books, kits, and videos about paper making and paper folding arts.

Origami Flowers

I'm enjoying this book very much. I always like the DVD lessons that Mr. LaFosse includes with many of his books, they are such a help. The flowers are new (to me at least) except for the ubiquitous lily -- why even include that one? -- It's everywhere, although it is always lovely. My only gripe, really, is with the paper that's included. It's ordinary and actually not-all-that-good kami. I'm pretty sure that's not the paper Mr. L. used in demonstrating the models on the DVD. I don't expect him to send along the great papers he and Mr. Alexander produce at their studio, but jeepers, if you're going to hype the fact that paper is included, give us a break and make an attempt to include something a little bit special. And a bit crisper. The best models I've made from this book use paper other than what was included with the book.

All in all this is a fun book, lots of neat flowers. Good presentation and helpful hints on the DVD (be sure to look at that as there is lots of help not included in the book). I almost want to give 4 1/2 stars, but I was put off by the mediocre paper when I expected better from Michael LaFosse. He is a good teacher. And the book is a good deal. And I'm happy to have it.

Disapppointing

Somewhat disappointing. The book shows some lovely flowers. I found the written/pictorial instructions very hard to follow (I am a novice at origami so that's probably partly on me). I did use the book to find video instructions on line. The papers do not seem to be good quality at all, much inferior to other papers I have bought online. Most of the papers are 2" square, very small to do the kind of folding required for the flowers, especially with paper that does not fold well. The DVD did not work on my computer...will try on the TV. For the price, I found it lacking. I saw a lot of positive reviews before I purchased it, so maybe part of the fault is with me. That's why I gave it 3 starts instead of 2. I do feel I wasted my money. The book gave me some good ideas and had me searching for easier instructions to follow so not a complete waste.

This is an excellent place to start for complete programming beginners of any age. Many intro books assume a basic level of technical knowledge in the way they present material. This books assumes nothing which makes it a good starting point especially for anyone who has ever been frustrated by other beginner tutorials or books. Additionally as a more experienced programmer, I still learned a lot about Python, a language I have never worked with before. Since everything is explained so clearly, it was easy to get enough knowledge about Python to feel like I could move on to working on my own Python projects.

Finally, I found that it was very easy to download the required supporting materials and get started. Plus the opportunity to actually write code starts almost immediately and occurs quite often as you work through the book.

In this book, I learned stuff that I never would have known about computer programming. After you read this, the next time the words enable Javascript comes up or you see a lot of symbols and words come up,now you will understand them. The book is good to keep for future reference. It's a book to learn programming even if you aren't planning on being a programmer. The exercises are doable, some are pretty difficult, but one can still get through them because of the way the book ties it all together then all other coding languages will be easier to learn and the learning curve for coding in general will be cut in half because all codes are similar. Highly recommend this book even if you are a complete newbie on programming.
