Very relevant and 'on the mark' book

I had the privilege of living in Tunisia for several years. I stumbled upon this book about a year before I left, which was after the January 2011 revolution that sparked the Arab Spring. I am writing this review in the hopes of making some Amazon readers aware that a new edition will be issued next month, one which I have not yet seen. Although I read this edition last year, I can recall enough detail to give it an adequate review.

What I liked most about this book was the fact that nearly ALL of the issues addressed in the book are the very ones which Tunisian society is currently addressing today. Tunisia has been going through the difficult process of writing its new constitution, defining the kind of government it wants, and clarifying the values which its citizens want to live by today.

The role of Islam, the past influence of France and its colonization, men vs. women in an Islamic society, how to interact and define relations with Europe, the West and to a lesser extent, the RC church; education, national development, politicians both good and bad, and the raging drawn out process of writing previous constitutions are among the topics covered in the book. Reading about them when I did during the following twelve months after Ben Ali was deposed helped contribute to my understanding of Tunisia's 'current events'.

The only reason I gave this book a 4 rather than 5 star rating was because it was written for a university audience by an academic historian. It had a few dry passages that seemed dry to me and more than once I lost track of what happened to one politician or another. Overall, I came away with better understanding of the place where my family and I lived for so long. It would also be very interesting to seek out Tunisian, Arabic and French historians and have them review this book as well. Perhaps his next book may be reviewed by the 'learned' from other cultures. As it is, there are far more books written in French and Arabic on Tunisia than in English; this book makes it easier for Anglophones to understand more about North Africa beyond WWII and the Allied troops.

I expect to meet up with Professor Perkins sometime in 2014 (since we don't live too far from each other) and I hope he will tell me how he came to write the update, even as the history of a really modern Tunisia is being re-written NOW on a daily basis. Today, January 9, 2014, the Prime Minister of Tunisia resigned (one of several since the revolution) and will be replaced by an interim PM who will hopefully guide the country through the next Presidential election.

Every detail plus a joy to read

I encountered Centering Prayer by watching the video Thomas Keating: A Rising Tide Of Silence, which was fascinating. Wanting to learn more about it, I read a couple of Fr. Keating's books, but for me Cynthia Bourgeault's is the best book on the subject. Develops love and beauty in one's heart

Coming from the school of concentrative methods (esoteric meditation), meditation usually proceeds from the cataphatic stage, using a seed thought or mantra, then into the climax, which the author calls the "apophatic" stage - the state of complete surrender to the inner silence of the Soul. This is also the method I learned from my earlier training in the system of Christian meditation by Fr. Nicolas Caballero, CMF. However, Rev. Bourgeault, using the tradition of Fr Thomas Merton and T.Keating, teaches in this work that it is possible to directly jump into this surrendered or apophatic state through constant practice. I'm really struggling since all my life I've been moulded to make the mind to be in conscious control of the process. While in centering prayer, surrender is achieved using the purity of heart - "being like little children"- before the Great Presence. Theoretically, using Eastern mystical terminology, this is a Yin approach to our inner centre, whereas, energy cultivation practices and those that use concentrated attention is "Yang" approach. I believe this balance should be achieved if true inner awakening is to be achieved. This insightful manual will be a good guide for me to start this journey. I'm grateful to have bumped into this book. Thanks to the author.

Surprised!

I was vaccinated against Christianity by Charismatic, Evangelical, Fundamentalism years ago and would never have found this book had I not found another book by Cynthia, loved it, and then discovered to my amazement that this vital, spiritually alive, person is an Episcopalian Priest! (Had I have realized this to begin with, I probably would never have read her book and that would have been my great loss.)

I downloaded three other books of Cynthia's onto my Kindle, (this one included,) and wow! I feel like purchasing thousands and thousands of hard copies of this book and personally delivering them to every minister of religion of every denomination and faith in the world!

As a student of Eckhart Tolle I am familiar with meditative technique leading to stillness and presence, but Cynthia describes so simply and beautifully that from stillness, there are even deeper depths to "Allowing God's Presence".

Don't be expecting epiphanies or overdoses of bliss. This book isn't about that. It IS about allowing the intangible, unknowable, Otherness we commonly call God to be within our lives in a way that transforms us and our lives over time. It's only hindsight that discloses His footprints in our souls, but they will be etched there in gold for all to see.

This book and the deceptively simple technique it contains is transformational.

Every person, from any or no faith, who is sincerely searching a deeper experience of the Divine in their life must read this book and do this.

About the Author
Daniel H. Huson is Professor of Algorithms in Bioinformatics at T�bingen University. He has authored numerous papers in bioinformatics, biology and mathematics, and is the main author of the widely-used computer programs Dendroscope, MEGAN and SplitsTree.

Regula Rupp received her PhD in Mathematics from Bern University in 2006. Between 2007 and 2009 she held a postdoctoral research position at T�bingen University, working with Daniel H. Huson in developing robust methods for computing phylogenetic networks from real biological data.

Celine Scornavacca is a postdoctoral researcher working on algorithms for phylogenetic networks with Daniel H. Huson at T�bingen University. She received her PhD in Computer Science from Montpellier University in 2009.

Very technical

The mathematical treatment is extremely thorough. As a biologistI found it rather lacking in relevance because it seemed more concerned with algorithms than with statistical inference of biological facts. But I commend the authors for rigor.

Excellent resource for the MT interested in the National Exam

On June 27, 2011 I passed the NCETM and I am now Nationally Certified in Therapeutic Massage. This book and the accompanying practice tests and games that were included on the LLW.com website added a fun way of retaining the information presented and I found them to be a wonderful resource. This book definitely lives up to its title of "Plain & Simple". I honestly don't think Laura Allen could have made it much simpler for anyone to study only the information specifically needed to pass the exam without a lot of fluff.

This book had greatly prepared me for the exam. She made fun to study with the companion of on-line questions and games that also helped. Laura also made everything easy to understand. I will refer this book to my fellow classmates that have yet to take the exam. Needless to say; I passed the exam!

Willing to do the work

I like this book. I agree with the others who say that the first part is worth the price of the book and the contribution by Gail Parent could have been left out.
I am using this book to reinforce what I do well and raise my skills in other areas. I have used the little exercises (fill in the blanks, etc.) to learn more about myself. I have used the affirmations when I felt down and I am starting to see that they work! I used to worry that I would not meet someone with whom I could have a "healthy" relationship. Lately, I worry less about that and I expend more energy in becoming healthier myself. What that boils down to is accepting the truths; some painful but some reassuring. For example, feeling needy. I never really wanted to admit that I felt needy at times, but now I realize what an advantage I have if I can simply observe it and decide how to handle myself. I have read the book through my tears once or twice. I have actually chosen to "be my own best friend" when that was the right thing to do. I'm feeling pretty optimistic these days. My current relationship is going well and if it folds, I'll be that much better for the next one. This book covers every area of relationships and I find it to be a solid handbook (owner's manual, if you will) for all this relationship stuff.

Self-esteem & Self-defense In The Battle of the Sexes

Geared more towards women than men (I suppose because few men read these kinds of books!), this book uses a somewhat forced but interesting parallel with an ancient text on war with modern day romance. Lots of good advice, although some of it is common sense and a rehash of what we already know. Still, the reminders are good and some of the advice is priceless. My favorite tidbit: men realize they are falling in love with you BY pursuring you so don't let yourself be caught too quickly--they won't get it. Yes, the play-hard-to-get theme once again, but with a few refreshing twists and more context that shows why and how it all works to everyone's benefit. Another gem: men care more about love and relationships than they like to reveal, as much as women do, actually. Well-written and intriguing.

Dead on advice!!

Coming from a male who has been extremely fortunate to have been very successful with women (happily married now!) -- I say that the advice the author gives on how to "close the deal" is 100% accurate. This is really a one-sided book however: it is written for women. The insightful direction given is for women on how to deal with men in all stages of a loving relationship. While I feel I can go on and on, let me simply suggest that every woman who is even slightly confused by male behavior with respects to love and committment to buy and read this book very carefully.
