Love this series

The books are wonderful. They are not chapter books per se, but for someone entering the reading arena, (one who plays video games), this is an excellent transition to the entertainment that can be had from a good book.

This brief, easily digested book uses the ways of wild wolf packs as a metaphor for achieving business, family and personal success. Towery, a business and organizational consultant, clearly conveys the sense of life in a wolf pack, its organizational structure and strategies for survival. With intermittent quotes, anecdotes and simple exercises for relating the wolf pack to business organizations and families, the author explores such values and virtues as patience, curiosity, loyalty, communication, perseverance and learning from failures. Towery notes that "while human social order seems to be falling apart... the organization of the wolf pack remains the model of playfulness, teamwork, efficiency, and sharing." While their numbers have dwindled considerably (thanks to humans), wolves have maintained a consistent and effective culture, even while adapting to environmental changes. Practicing a kind of "natural population control" and living always "in balance with nature," wolves, Towery asserts, have values that "are never compromised." Wolves remain devoted to the group and affectionate, and place the education and care of their young above all else. Interesting and also a disappointment

Reading about the behavior of Wolves was interesting.
The authors application to business is deeply flawed.

Business is NOT the wild where the strongest survive.
It is a tangle of laws, regulations and full protection of those in "select groups".
It is far from the free Darwinian interaction of Wolves.
Simply put, i feel the author is trying like so many before to convince humans that there is some type of behavioral sensibility in the "Wild" that can be adopted and thus benefit humanity. It cannot. Society does not merely structure itself based on capability but also protects those that choose not to be a part of it, choose not to contribute to it ad most importantly try to destroy it. The society of Wolves would handle these types quickly with finality. There is NO way to apply the Wisdom of these wild & noble creatures to a society that kills the unborn, abuses the elderly and excuses criminals.

About the Author
Martin Gardner was a renowned author who published over 70 books on subjects from science and math to poetry and religion. He also had a lifelong passion for magic tricks and puzzles. Well known for his mathematical games column in Scientific American and his "Trick of the Month" in Physics Teacher magazine, Gardner attracted a loyal following with his intelligence, wit, and imagination.

Martin Gardner: A Remembrance
The worldwide mathematical community was saddened by the death of Martin Gardner on May 22, 2010. Martin was 95 years old when he died, and had written 70 or 80 books during his long lifetime as an author. Martin's first Dover books were published in 1956 and 1957: Mathematics, Magic and Mystery, one of the first popular books on the intellectual excitement of mathematics to reach a wide audience, and Fads and Fallacies in the Name of Science, certainly one of the first popular books to cast a devastatingly skeptical eye on the claims of pseudoscience and the many guises in which the modern world has given rise to it. Both of these pioneering books are still in print with Dover today along with more than a dozen other titles of Martin's books. They run the gamut from his elementary Codes, Ciphers and Secret Writing, which has been enjoyed by generations of younger readers since the 1980s, to the more demanding The New Ambidextrous Universe: Symmetry and Asymmetry from Mirror Reflections to Superstrings, which Dover published in its final revised form in 2005.

To those of us who have been associated with Dover for a long time, however, Martin was more than an author, albeit a remarkably popular and successful one. As a member of the small group of long-time advisors and consultants, which included NYU's Morris Kline in mathematics, Harvard's I. Bernard Cohen in the history of science, and MIT's J. P. Den Hartog in engineering, Martin's advice and editorial suggestions in the formative 1950s helped to define the Dover publishing program and give it the point of view which — despite many changes, new directions, and the consequences of evolution — continues to be operative today.

Frames superstrings and twistors

Every decade Gardner updates this book. The five new chapters in the 1990 edition, including material on twistors and superstrings, are well worth the price. What Gardner does best is frame the new theories within a historical perspective. For example, he says it is impossible not to compare string theory with Lord Kelvin's (W. Gardner shows the vortex string theory and the superstring theory to be kissing cousins: Lord Kelvin used perfect fluid to refer to the superstring quantum vacuum -- both referring to the same sub-space area. String theory speaks of vibrating frequencies of energy while vortex rings were also vibrating frequencies that gave the atoms different properties. Instead of quantum foam with jittering virtual particles, vortex theory had vortex sponges with billions of vortex motions whirling in all directions.
Gardner's account of Roger Penrose's twistor theory is short and excellent. Physicists have gotten tangled up trying to speak of deeper down events which are hidden from view due to their sub-Planck length size (10 to the minus 33rd power of a centimeter). Here it is pointed out that "on a sufficiently small scale the concept of a space-time point evaporates in the complex space of twistor theory." Twistor theory, like superstring theory, was merely trying to formulate how the submicroscopic particles come into being. Both theories consist of math and lack any experimental verification. To repeat, the author discusses these obtuse theories in a way that frames their overall direction of thought. Gardner appears to agree with Howard George who calls superstring theory a "recreational mathematical theology." The bottom line -- both twistor and string theory are philosophy -- not physics.

Wonderful, but somewhat out-of-date (only at the end).

I think that THE NEW AMBIDEXTROUS UNIVERSE (1990) is a wonderful book on symmetry and asymmetry in the worlds of everyday life, chemistry, physics, and unification theories. Everything in this book is noteworthy, and also up-to-date except for the last few chapters.
It is a very good updating of the previous (1978) edition, which concluded with many open questions in elementary particle physics that were resolved (and new questions raised) in 1978 - 1989.
It is high time for this book to be updated if Mr. Gardner can manage it (he is rather elderly; born in 1914), and a publisher will take a new edition. Books like this are gueling to revise and update.

Review from a non-scientific perspective

I'm not going to say that I understand all of this. Most of it is way over my head, but after reading it, I can say that I understand more now than I did before. I'm planning on attacking it again in a couple years. Overall, however, Gardner does a good job of bring complicated scientific theory down to a plain English level by using diagrams and analogies.

Very relevant and 'on the mark' book

I had the privilege of living in Tunisia for several years. I stumbled upon this book about a year before I left, which was after the January 2011 revolution that sparked the Arab Spring. I am writing this review in the hopes of making some Amazon readers aware that a new edition will be issued next month, one which I have not yet seen. Although I read this edition last year, I can recall enough detail to give it an adequate review.

What I liked most about this book was the fact that nearly ALL of the issues addressed in the book are the very ones which Tunisian society is currently addressing today. Tunisia has been going through the difficult process of writing its new constitution, defining the kind of government it wants, and clarifying the values which its citizens want to live by today.

The role of Islam, the past influence of France and its colonization, men vs. women in an Islamic society, how to interact and define relations with Europe, the West and to a lesser extent, the RC church; education, national development, politicians both good and bad, and the raging drawn out process of writing previous constitutions are among the topics covered in the book. Reading about them when I did during the following twelve months after Ben Ali was deposed helped contribute to my understanding of Tunisia's 'current events'.

The only reason I gave this book a 4 rather than 5 star rating was because it was written for a university audience by an academic historian. It had a few dry passages that seemed dry to me and more than once I lost track of what happened to one politician or another. Overall, I came away with better understanding of the place where my family and I lived for so long. It would also be very interesting to seek out Tunisian, Arabic and French historians and have them review this book as well. Perhaps his next book may be reviewed by the 'learned' from other cultures. As it is, there are far more books written in French and Arabic on Tunisia than in English; this book makes it easier for Anglophones to understand more about North Africa beyond WWII and the Allied troops.

I expect to meet up with Professor Perkins sometime in 2014 (since we don't live too far from each other) and I hope he will tell me how he came to write the update, even as the history of a really modern Tunisia is being re-written NOW on a daily basis. Today, January 9, 2014, the Prime Minister of Tunisia resigned (one of several since the revolution) and will be replaced by an interim PM who will hopefully guide the country through the next Presidential election.

About the Author
Cynthia Bourgeault has studied and taught in a number of Benedictine monasteries in the United States and Canada. An Episcopal priest, she is well known as a retreat and conference leader, teacher of prayer, and writer on the spiritual life. She is the author of a number of books, including Mystical Hope.

Every detail plus a joy to read

I encountered Centering Prayer by watching the video Thomas Keating: A Rising Tide Of Silence, which was fascinating. Wanting to learn more about it, I read a couple of Fr. Keating's books, but for me Cynthia Bourgeault's is the best book on the subject. She is a blessing, a highly spiritual woman (a reverend), as well as a talented writer, and the book not only explains the nuts and bolts of Centering Prayer but does it in a way that is a joy to read and very inspirational. Highest recommendation.

Develops love and beauty in one's heart

Coming from the school of concentrative methods (esoteric meditation), meditation usually proceeds from the cataphatic stage, using a seed thought or mantra, then into the climax, which the author calls the "apophatic" stage - the state of complete surrender to the inner silence of the Soul. This is also the method I learned from my earlier training in the system of Christian meditation by Fr. Nicolas Caballero, CMF. However, Rev. Bourgeault, using the tradition of Fr Thomas Merton and T.Keating, teaches in this work that it is possible to directly jump into this surrendered or apophatic state through constant practice. I'm really struggling since all my life I've been moulded to make the mind to be in conscious control of the process. While in centering prayer, surrender is achieved using the purity of heart - "being like little children"- before the Great Presence. Theoretically, using Eastern mystical terminology, this is a Yin approach to our inner centre, whereas, energy cultivation practices and those that use concentrated attention is "Yang" approach. I believe this balance should be achieved if true inner awakening is to be achieved. This insightful manual will be a good guide for me to start this journey. I'm grateful to have bumped into this book. Thanks to the author.

Surprised!

I was vaccinated against Christianity by Charismatic, Evangelical, Fundamentalism years ago and would never have found this book had I not found another book by Cynthia, loved it, and then discovered to my amazement that this vital, spiritually alive, person is an Episcopalian Priest! (Had I have realized this to begin with, I probably would never have read her book and that would have been my great loss.)

I downloaded three other books of Cynthia's onto my Kindle, (this one included,) and wow! I feel like purchasing thousands and thousands of hard copies of this book and personally delivering them to every minister of religion of every denomination and faith in the world!

As a student of Eckhart Tolle I am familiar with meditative technique leading to stillness and presence, but Cynthia describes so simply and beautifully that from stillness, there are even deeper depths to "Allowing God's Presence".

Don't be expecting epiphanies or overdoses of bliss. This book isn't about that. It IS about allowing the intangible, unknowable, Otherness we commonly call God to be within our lives in a way that transforms us and our lives over time. It's only hindsight that discloses His footprints in our souls, but they will be etched there in gold for all to see.

This book and the deceptively simple technique it contains is transformational.

Every person, from any or no faith, who is sincerely searching a deeper experience of the Divine in their life must read this book and do this.
