Gr 7 Up—Dee is not happy to be spending a week in the sticks of Washington state, in the care of her veterinarian grandpa. Dee's at an awkward age: half of her wants her parents to take away the hurt of her younger brother's death, and the other half wants them to leave her the heck alone. She rebelliously "borrows" her grandpa's old truck, picks up a handsome teenage hitchhiker, and heads into town to buy a bus ticket back to someplace familiar. But plans change when a mysterious pulse knocks out all technology. Dee and hitchhiker Mason spring into action: helping firefighters, buying groceries, doing good deeds, and bonding. There are happy coincidences, like running into a survivalist who tells them what to buy at the store. Grandpa has a farm, Mason can fix anything, and the lady up the road cooks and cans! The story is straightforward and simple: baddies are leering and greedy; goodies are kind and prayerful. Kate Rudd has a distinctive tone and captures Grandpa's folksy twang. belief in an apocalypse

I give this 5 stars not because it was written perfect but because it was a refreshing change for me. I read a ton of apocalyptic, post- apocalyptic, and dystopian books and most of them are anti-religion. Some of the books are overtly anti but most just make you take for granted that you would never believe in God after what the world has been through. I've always thought that was a little ignorant of authors to think that when history shows that a lot of people turn to religion after tragedy.
This book didn't beat you over the head with religion but gives room for people to believe even during trying circumstances. The characters felt believable. It was an easy read. There are some grammatical errors that need fixing but since I'm sure this was self-published, it's forgiven. It was a good first novel.

Can't wait for book 2!!

It's nice to find a post apocalyptic book that leaves you feeling hopeful. Without glossing over the atrocious aftermath of a disastrous event, the author somehow manages to leave you with the feeling that these people have a chance to survive, and you're really glad because they feel like your friends. The book also makes a real case for the importance of being prepared in the event of an emergency. Thought provoking, suspenseful and fast-paced, this is a great read!

~~Learning to Survive~~

Dee is staying with her grandfather in Northern Washington for a short period of time. And, this is exactly when an EMP occurs. Her grandfather is a retired Vet and this comes in handy. Dee must learn how to survive and part of this is being a farmer. My favorite scene was trying to milk a cow for the first time!
There are lots of unsavory characters in this one, as well. But on the other hand, the reader will meet some truly handy people of all ages.
Most highly recommended and a well done to this author for a well written book.
