According to Forbes magazine, Johnson is one of the 400 richest Americans. He is CEO of the Johnson Publishing Company, rated among the top 100 African-American-owned businesses. Born into poverty, Johnson was 15 years old when he moved from Arkansas City to Chicago. There he discovered the vast untapped potential of the black consumer marketplace, and in 1942, 24-year-old Johnson created his first magazine, Negro Digest , a phenomenal success soon followed by Ebony and Jet . By expanding into broadcasting, TV production, and cosmetics, Johnson has helped his company maintain a strong balance sheet. He has also held numerous diplomatic posts. Bennett, executive editor of Ebony, helps Johnson present his story within the broader context of post-World War II America. Highly recommended for most libraries. A book that all should read. Really enjoyed reading this book from cover to cover. Mr. John Johnson accomplished so much during a time when it was impossible for certain demographic of people to make a decent living. Lessons throughout this book. Heard about this book from Byron Allen and he was right about this book.

Excellent Book

I give this book out as gifts to teenagers all the time. I teach Junior Achievement classes in middle and high school. I often give the book out as a gift. Sometimes the student does not read it but someone in their home did. I love to hear their thoughts about this book. It is an amazing story about an amazing man.

In general I really love to read autobiographies and biographies. I learn a lot from taking time to hear about the journey and the process that someone goes through to achieve their success. This book outlines Mr. Johnson's process so well. There is so much that can be learned by reading this book. A magnificent story. I need to read it again.

Insights well worth internalizing

After reading Earl G. Graves's biting autobiography, I fully expected John H. Johnson's manuscript for success to be riddled with distain. I was pleasantly surprised however to find that Johnson; through such works as, Think and Grow Rich, by Napoleon Hill, and How to Win Friends..., by Dale Carnegie, made a fortune turning social negatives into profitable and professional positives. Having met eight U. S. Presidents along the way, Johnson's autobiography is a refreshing treatise on determination. It should be noted that much of Johnson's success came about before integration, when the African American community lived by the, "it takes a village," mentality. The nurturing he was given during the early years provided for a favorable turn of events ultimately guiding him; not without the requisite obstacles, toward a life of success. John H. Johnson's, Succeeding Against the Odds, is a testament to the spoils of desire, determination, delayed gratification and a strong belief in ones self.

Another Wonderful Grayscale Coloring book from Bennett Klein – printed on one side of the page

[[VIDEOID:a8ed8eb1216709f9adf316bd5cd68f24]]This is the second volume in what I hope will be a long running series of grayscale coloring books from Bennett Klein. I just began learning to color grayscale over the last four months so my experience is really limited. That being said, I have both of Mr. Kleins's books and am enjoying them tremendously. I have a few other books and those are all based on photographs while “Colour My Sketchbook 2” is based on beautiful hand-drawn artwork. I love the imaginative spin that shows through in each of this designs.

Once again, we go into this artist's imagination and find women with elaborate hairstyles, animals that dress up rather fine, and animals in lovely collage style format. I think it is a great aid that, at the beginning of the book, we are provided thumbnails with titles and room for color palette info for each design.

I will go into detail about the book below for those who are interested; however, here is an overview of what I found:

25 Hand-drawn sketches in grayscale
Designs are printed on one side of white, thin non-perforated paper typical of CreateSpace
Glue Binding
Easy to open to flat position for coloring
Designs do not merge into the binding
Alcohol and water-based markers bleed through the page
Gel pens leave shadows of color on the back of page
Coloring pencils work great with this paper

I usually use soft lead pencils for grayscale projects. That is what I did with my first project. I put my color on in what I understand is typical for grayscale coloring (light on first, dark second, and medium tones last for blending.) I just finished my first project in the book and have already begun my second one. Just as I did with the first book, I will probably pick up a second one. I just love the idea of working each design in different colorways.

I really love his work and hope to see more.

I just received my copy of this book today, and I love it! I read a review that said some of the images are silly and I can only assume they are referring to the ones with the animal heads? That being said if that's the case, I've seen images like this before so I don't find the silly at all but, there is one with a woman's body sitting in a chair and a cat's head that isn't very good at all. It doesn't look like they were drawn at the same time. It almost looks like the cat head was photocopied on the woman's body, and it doesn't even line up. Other than that I love the book!

I read a review on the 1st book where someone said the drawings were for intermediate to advanced colorist. when I initially read this I decided not to buy it because I would classify my skill level that high, but then after a few days past I decided not to let that or anything else limit me. I wanted to buy the book so I did, and I'm working on my first one and I'm proud of the way it is coming out! So, challenge yourself you just might be surprised. **UPDATE** I just finished my first one so, I'm adding the picture. I have 2 more to complete and will post those as well soon.

This is Bennett's second book and its AMAZING ! I wouldn't call it a full gray scale book but maybe a bit of gray scale.. The pictures are wonderful ! I don't know why a reviewer said the pics were goofy, I find them all amazing and this guy is such a great artist ! Go to his facebook page and look at all the people who have colored his pictures both from this book and his first book . Such talent. ! and he is a super nice guy on top of that too. Always encouraging everyone who colors his pictures. I've attached a pic of the "goofy dog" as one reviewer called it. I call this Sir Dog and I think he is great. This is just a WIP (work in progress) 10 stars to Bennett Klein !

So Erica & Daniel's story continues

Okay so I enjoyed this book for the most part. Not sure if I'll seek out book 3 though.
Daniel is a solid, stable, trusting person even though he dealt with deception in his past relationship. Erica on the other hand is so annoyingly unsure, indecisive, & broken because of Eli. Erica confronted Eli, Daniel kicked his butt, and while Erica has physically moved on she has not mentally or emotionally.
I seriously had to skip over some of the sex scenes(though I enjoy the heat) because it was just too much ALL the time. It was like Erica was unstable unless they were having sex but when they were she was all about her some Daniel, sure of their love, and knew she wanted. Any other time she was like don't define the relationship, don't talk about marriage, don't say love, can't meet your family......jeez louise, it wore me out...I'm tired for poor Daniel.
Can we get Erica a psych evaluation?
This series could potentially go far with all the diff characters but it has moved at a snail's pace for Erica & Daniel. They just now said the relationship, boyfriend, girlfriend words and this is the end of book 2...how many books are in this series?

I really enjoyed Daniel and Erica really loving each other. It was obvious that Eli was never the one for Erica. Erica couldn't stand the idea of being seperated from Daniel and he didn't want to be a part from her. Emily ans Melanue are great siblings. I really loved the sister thing with Emily wanting to go all "Kill Bill" on Eli. I mean really, he had some nerve.
Truly a fun time seeing the different countries on this couples journey of freedom, love and passion. I want them to just jump. Love is so worth the fall.
You need to read the first book in order to really understand the journey.

I was also given this an ARC for an honest review. I would still want to read it even if I wasn't given a copy to review.

Considered a standard text for etching and engraving, I felt it left a bit to be desired. I much prefered "The Art of Etching" by E.M. Lumsden. Considering the era it written, it seems to be a bit more focused on the mindset of art and experimental creation as opposed to straight forward technical plates.

Big value for little money!

This book is stocked as reference in a classroom situation. Lots of detailed information on many techniques in an easy to follow manner along with detailed photographs. Detailed recipes for etching solutions and description of appropriate use. Great for the novice but also valuable as a reference. Lots of valuable information for a small price.

An outstanding text

Leaf's text covers a remarkable range of intaglio techniques. The first chapters cover the basics of tools, printing papers, and setting up a workshop. Next, she covers the basics of familiar printmaking techniques, etching (including soft ground), aquatint, and some interesting variations. This section also includes recipes for inks and grounds - not encyclopedic, but a basic set of materials for different techniques. Leaf covers each technique methodically, describing its goals, materials, and process. The end of each chapter offers an especially helpful "what went wrong" section.

Following the basics, Leaf continues with some elaborations, including multiple layers of aquatint and viscosity printing. She also lays out some unusual techniques, including collographs and "tuilegraphs." That's a fascinating variation on linoleum prints, but based on slightly different materials and very distinctive ways of creating the image in the printing surface.

Despite its strengths, this book has a few significant weak spots. Safety standards aren't always what a current reader would hope. For example, discussion of the corrosive etchants talks about flushing eyes with water in case of an acid spash, but doesn't mention goggles. Elsewhere, she mentions protective gloves in the text but omits those gloves from the photos that show the process under discussion. And, when it comes to disposing of spent etchant, I can't agree with pouring "neutralized acid on the ground where you don't expect anything to grow." On the positive side, techniques are profusely illustrated, showing both techniques and finished products.

Those problems just mean that the reader should approach this with a critical eye, not avoid it completely. There's just too much good here to give up.

Jeremy Duff is Director of Lifelong Learning in the Liverpool Diocese, and Canon of Liverpool Cathedral. Previously he taught Greek and New Testament at Oxford University.

David Wenham is Dean of Wycliffe Hall, Oxford and one of the foremost British Evangelical New Testament scholars.

Commencing summer 2005 Jonathan T. Pennington is Assistant Professor of New Testament Interpretation at Southern Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. His previous publications include Vocabulary Words for New Testament Greek published in 2001.

It would be better with the accents.

(I cannot comment on the CD because I have not heard it; my review is on only the textbook)
Jeremy Duff's book is a good review for for people with some experience in reading Koin� Greek. But it would be somewhat terse for the absolute beginner. His method of presenting concepts in complete categories is quite engaging. For example, In his chapter on the subjunctive mood, he gives this overview with examples of the instances when Koin� writers used the subjunctive mood:

* Indefinite clauses: whoever, wherever, whenever...
* Purpose clauses: in order that...
* Exhortations: Let's...
* Deliberations: What shall I...?
* Prohibitions: Don't...!
* Emphatic negative future: I will never...

He discusses in a similar way participles, complex sentences, conjunctions, prepositions, the perfect tenses, and so forth. This is a smooth way of reviewing these topics. This book also offers copious sentence exercises for practicing these constructions.

The only part of his book that I do not approve of is the lack of written accents. In spite of the attractive way that this book presents Greek, A learner will have difficulty in pronouncing words because they carry no accent marks. Mr. Duff states that "the accents are not taught in this book for three important reasons:

* Accents were not present in written Greek in the New Testament period.
* The rules of accentuation are complicated, and you have enough to learn.
* Accents don't help you translate or understand Greek."

The accents are helpful to me personally for memorizing vocabulary because they indicate which syllable to stress. Knowing where to put the stress on a word is an aid to memorization because it helps me to give a rhythm and a pronunciation to the word. Knowing the stress is also important for conjugating verbs and for declining nouns because all verbs and many nouns change their stress as they are inflected. Moreover, I have never seen a Greek bible text without accents. New Testament and Septuagint texts always indicate accents. So also do the writings of the Christian fathers. I imagine that a neophyte to Koin� Greek may well experience some frustration while trying to learn Greek words without the accents.

Otherwise, Elements of New Testament Greek is an engaging read.

Delivers Promise

As stated in the book on page 1, the aim of the book is "To help you learn enough Greek to read the New Testament." Without a teacher, I worked through the chapters and did the all of the "A" exercises at the end of each chapter. After completing all of the chapters, I am happy to say I can read the New Testament, not perfectly, mind you, but with the help of a dictionary and Duff's book I can get through just about any passage.

I found the explanations clear and consise and I never felt overwhelmed or lost as I have with some other texts.

Good approach, but needs a second, corrected printing to be issued soon

I'd like to be able to give this grammar a '5' rating, but that may have to wait until after the next printing. I have studied and taught foreign languages, and so I feel qualified to say that Duff's approach to teaching Koine Greek is sound. He presents the grammar in a logical order and builds concepts one upon another as a good grammar should do for the beginning student. Unfortunately, there are several problems with the book: 1) There are far too many errors, even for a first printing; vital items are at times omitted from some of the grammar charts, which obviously makes learning those concepts correctly a difficult task. I'm not saying that Duff is incorrect, but that the book was carelessly edited. 2) There are some things to which Duff does give short shrift (for example, he mentions 'attraction' with relative pronouns in a small footnote as if it were unusual; however, 'attraction' is actually the norm in such cases and is an important concept to understand). 3)the website with "useful helps" seems to have been abandoned; there are some useful PowerPoint slides which can be downloaded (and some links to other sites are given), but there are no additional exercises or other materials as promised on the back cover of the book. I can only assume that this book was rushed to print since there are so many editing errors and the website is incomplete. Still, in spite of my criticisms, I believe this could be a good beginning grammar; I hope to see the errors corrected and the website completed so that it will become just that.

Addendum: The accompanying CD's are excellent helps for the beginning student of Koine Greek; for any student who does purchase this book, I highly recommend buying the version of the book that comes with the CD's.

Math Teachers: Do not inflict this book on your students, please!

Part of the problem may be that I'm having to repeat integral calculus for the third time -- maybe some of this is me.

That said, they left out center of mass integrals -- which are part of the corequisites for the physics class that made taking Calc II a necessity. The text varies from being persnickety verbose about topics we're not being tested on to symbolically dense with scant textual exposition for the things that we do need to know.

I realize calculus is a dense subject, and that it's often easier to convey a point by walking through an example, but when they do try to explain with examples, the ones they pick are so simplistic that they are nearly useless references for how to work the more complex problems at the end of the sections.

Oh, and I was given a used copy of the solutions manual. I've gone over some of their solutions with four different professors at my school (they help out in the tutor center). Let's just say the sarcasm from the professionals over their solution choices has been entertaining.

The text is absolutely perfect and the used book stickers are not plastered across the front cover which is wonderful! I also just found out that I need this text for three full semesters of Calculus, so the breakdown of the price is actually phenomenal!!!!!! And the expedited shipping was so reasonable and my book arrived so quickly! Five stars, and so many more if I could! Thank you endlessly!(:

The book does well in explaining concepts and provide reasonable examples. Formulas are placed in boxes so that you can distinguished it quickly. I especially like the mymathlab part like the 'help me solve' button and the interactive etext, which helps you visualize. Note that my university offered the mymath lab as well as etext that accompanies it. This book did not come with it.
